Troubleshoot clips

ShowI don't see the pictures I added to Microsoft Clip Organizer.

  • The clips might be in the Unclassified Clips collection. After you add a keyword to the clips, or add the clips to another collection, they can be found by using the keyword or description or by looking in that collection, and will no longer be in Unclassified clips. To learn about adding keywords or moving clips, click Organize clips on the Clip Art task pane (task pane: A window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your files.) to open Clip Organizer. Then, on the Help menu, click Microsoft Clip Organizer Help.

  • If you can't find a clip that was added by another user on the same computer, this is because the clips you import or change are only visible to you when personal user profiles are enabled. If you do not have profiles enabled, all clips are shared among all of the users of the computer. For more information about user profiles, see Windows Help.

ShowClip Organizer says it can't find a clip.

When Clip Organizer cannot locate a file you have requested, it usually means that the location of the file has changed. You may have moved or removed the file, or changed your hardware configuration (for example, you might have added a new disk drive, changing the drive volume to a different letter designation).

ShowI can't see animations in the Insert Clip Art task pane.

The thumbnail (thumbnail: A miniature representation of a picture.) in the results pane shows only the first frame of the animation. To view the entire animation, open the clip in the Preview window.

ShowHow?

  1. Find the media clip (clip: A single media file, including art, sound, animation, or movies.) you want to preview.

    ShowHow?

    1. On the Insert menu, point to Picture, and then click Clip Art.
    2. In the Clip Art task pane (task pane: A window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your files.), in the Search for box, type a word or phrase that describes the clip (clip: A single media file, including art, sound, animation, or movies.) you want or type in all or some of the file name of the clip.
    3. To narrow your search, do one or both of the following:
      • To limit search results to a specific collection of clips, in the Search in box, click the arrow and select the collections you want to search.
      • To limit search results to a specific type of media file, in the Results should be box, click the arrow and select the check box next to the types of clips you want to find.
    4. Click Go.

    ShowTip

If you don't know the exact file name, you can substitute wildcard characters for one or more real characters. Use the asterisk (*) as a substitute for zero or more characters in a file name. Use the question mark (?) as a substitute for a single character in a file name.

  2. In the Results box, move your mouse pointer over the clip's thumbnail (thumbnail: A miniature representation of a picture.), and then click the arrow that appears.
  3. Click Preview/Properties.

ShowWhere's the link to the Clip Gallery Live Web site?

When you enter a search keyword in the Clip Art task pane (task pane: A window within an Office application that provides commonly used commands. Its location and small size allow you to use these commands while still working on your files.), and you have an Internet connection, Clip Organizer automatically searches for matching clips on our Web site. If it finds clips there, you'll see the following icon in the corner of the thumbnail (thumbnail: A miniature representation of a picture.):

If you want to use this clip, just click the thumbnail; as long as you're connected to the Internet, Clip Organizer will automatically download the clip from the Web and insert it into your document.

If you want to go to the site yourself, click Clip art on Office Online at the bottom of the Clip Art task pane.

ShowI see an icon instead of a clip.

When you insert or drag a picture or motion clip into your document, and you do not have a graphics filter installed for that clip, you may get an icon instead of a graphic.

Please make note of the information in the accompanying dialog box, which will explain why your request was not processed and point you towards solving the problem.

ShowI can't select all the pieces in my clip.

Many of the draw-type clips you see in the Microsoft Clip Organizer are metafiles (.wmf (Windows Metafile Format (WMF): A vector graphics format for Windows-compatible computers used mostly as a clip art format in word-processing documents.) files). If you converted the clip to a drawing object and then ungrouped it, you may be left with many little pieces that can be difficult to manage.

If you do ungroup a clip into individual drawing objects, you can restore the individual objects to one clip by selecting all the pieces and then grouping them.

Show(Publisher) Select all the pieces and group them.

On the Object toolbar, click Select Objects Button image. To select all the clip's pieces, hold down the mouse button and draw a square around the entire clip. On the lower right corner of the object border, click Group Button image.

If you want to edit part of a group (group: A collection of objects that behave as one for the purpose of moving, resizing, or rotating them. A group can be composed of multiple sets of groups.)— change the color of a shape, for example— it's best to subselect (subselect: To select individual shapes within a group.) the part you want to edit instead of ungrouping the entire clip into individual drawing objects (drawing object: any graphic that you can draw or insert, and change and enhance. Drawing objects include Custom Shapes, curves, lines, and WordArt drawing objects.).

ShowHow?

  1. Click on the grouped object to select it.
  2. Click again on the individual object within the group to subselect it.

The selection handles (handle: One of several small shapes displayed around an object when the object is selected. You can move or reshape an object by clicking on a handle and dragging.) of the item will show as gray circles.

    Subselected object

  3. Edit the object as you want.

Show(Other Office programs) Select all the pieces and group them.

To select all the pieces of the ungrouped clip, on the Drawing toolbar in your Microsoft Office program, click Select Objects Button image. Hold down the mouse button and draw a selection rectangle (selection rectangle: A rectangle with sizing handles that surrounds a selected object or objects.) around the entire clip. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Draw menu, and then click Group. This will not undo any changes you have made to the pieces of the clip.
