Symptoms
Running a presentation on a portable computer and a projector, you observe any of the following problems with the projected image.
The image is cropped or the text quality is poor
If the entire slide image is not projected onto the screen, or if the text appears choppy, try any of the following:
- Adjust screen area For optimal image quality, set the resolution of the presentation and the computer so that they are compatible with the projector that you are using:
- On the Slide Show menu, click Set Up Show.
- Under Performance, in the Slide show resolution list, click the appropriate resolution for your projector.
Refer to your projector documentation for the optimum or native resolution setting for your projector model. If you cannot find this information, or if you are uncertain, most projectors support a maximum of 800 x 600 pixels (SVGA (super video graphics adapter (SVGA): This standard can display a screen size of 800 by 600 pixels or more.) resolution).
If the only choice in the Slide show resolution list is Use Current Resolution, then your computer display is currently set to a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. To obtain additional choices, increase your screen resolution in Windows by right-clicking the desktop, clicking Properties on the shortcut menu, and then making your changes in the Display Properties dialog box.
- Click OK.
Note If you are seeing stretching or distorting in the projected slide image, then the templates for the original presentation and the destination presentation may be set up with different aspect ratios (aspect ratio: The ratio between picture width and picture height. This ratio can be maintained even when resizing a picture.). Most templates use either a 4:3 or a 16:9 aspect ratio. Find links to more information about adjusting the aspect ratio in the See Also section.
- Turn off computer display To obtain the best projected image when using certain portable computers, you might need to turn off the computer's own screen display, especially if the optimum or native resolution of the computer exceeds the native resolution of the projector.
The image goes blank during periods of computer inactivity
This problem might be caused by a power-saving utility on the computer that, after a specified period with no keyboard or mouse activity, disables the computer's video output signal.
Prevent signal interruption by disabling all power-saving utility programs and screen savers on the computer. This can sometimes be accomplished by using the power and display options in Control Panel (click Start, and then click Control Panel). On some computers, it might be necessary to check the system BIOS settings. For more information, see your portable computer documentation.
The image is dimmer than it used to be
Some projectors use a metal halide lamp, the brightness of which will fade over time. Check your projector documentation for information regarding lamp timers. If the lamp life is expired, replace the lamp for maximum brightness.
The image is not rectangular
Try one or both of the following:
Check the projector position Make sure that the projector is placed so that the angle of projection is perpendicular to the viewing screen.
Adjust the elevator mechanism Raise or lower the elevator mechanism of the projector to obtain a rectangular image.
You might need to place the projector on a higher or lower surface to completely eliminate the distortion.
