Troubleshoot text in shapes and text boxes

ShowThe shape isn't resizing to fit the text.

ShowText won't move, flip, or rotate with its shape.

The text is probably in a text box (text box: A movable, resizable container for text or graphics. Use text boxes to position several blocks of text on a page or to give text a different orientation from other text in the document.). Text created with the Text Box tool Button image and placed on top of an object isn't attached to the object. It won't move or rotate with the object.

  • To attach text so it becomes part of the shape, click the object and type or paste the text.
  • To group the text box and object so they move as a single unit, hold down SHIFT as you select the text and the object, click Draw on the Drawing toolbar, and then click Group.

Note   Text cannot by flipped, even when it is attached to the shape. If you want to flip text (for example, to create a mirror-image effect), use WordArt (WordArt: Text objects you create with ready-made effects to which you can apply additional formatting options.) and then flip it.

ShowWhen I select a text box and start typing, the existing text isn't replaced with what I type.

ShowI can't resize a shape beyond its text.

ShowWhen I add text to a shape, the object changes size and I don't want it to.

The Resize AutoShape to fit text option is turned on. Select the object, double-click the selection rectangle (selection rectangle: A rectangle with sizing handles that surrounds a selected object or objects.) of the AutoShape (AutoShapes: A group of ready-made shapes that includes basic shapes, such as rectangles and circles, plus a variety of lines and connectors, block arrows, flowchart symbols, stars and banners, and callouts.) or text box (text box: A movable, resizable container for text or graphics. Use text boxes to position several blocks of text on a page or to give text a different orientation from other text in the document.), and then click the Text Box tab. Clear the Word wrap text in AutoShape check box.

If you want the text to expand to the right and the left beyond the object, also clear the Word wrap text in AutoShape check box. To expand the text up and down while it remains inside the right and left borders of the object, select the Word wrap text in AutoShape check box.

ShowI tried to change the margins for text inside an object, but nothing happened.
