Differences between the OpenDocument Presentation (.odp) format and the PowerPoint (.pptx) format

When you work with two file formats, like .pptx and .odp, there might be formatting differences, and not all features will be available. You’ll be able to convert data and content, but the way you work with the content might be different depending on which formats you use.

Switch your default file format

  1. Do one of the following:
  • In PowerPoint 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button Office button image > PowerPoint Options.
  • In PowerPoint 2010 or PowerPoint 2013, click File > Options.
  1. Click Save.
  2. Under Save presentations, in the Save files in this format list, click the file format you want to use by default.

What is supported when I save a PowerPoint presentation in the OpenDocument Presentation format?

The table below shows which PowerPoint features are fully, partially, or not supported in the OpenDocument Presentation (.odp) format.

  • Supported     Both PowerPoint and the OpenDocument Presentation format support this feature. Content, formatting, and usability won’t be lost.
  • Partially Supported     Both PowerPoint and the OpenDocument Presentation format support this feature, but formatting and usability might be affected. No text or data is lost, but formatting and how you work with text or graphics might be different.
  • Not Supported     The feature in PowerPoint isn’t supported in the OpenDocument Presentation format. If you plan to save your PowerPoint document in the OpenDocument Presentation format, don’t use this feature or you risk in your losing content, formatting, and usability of that part of your presentation.

Presentation Design Masters

When you save a presentation in .odp format, all theme information is lost and placed onto the masters/layouts. Inheritance of theme defaults, such as fonts, colors, and effects on new shapes, are no longer inherited. All existing shapes continue to follow the inheritance of formatting from the masters and layouts.

Placeholders are saved and persisted in .odp files. All placeholders continue to inherit their formatting properties from the corresponding placeholders in the layouts and master slides.
