Change font styles in a PowerPoint 97/2000 presentation

Each template for PowerPoint 97/2000 presentations has default font styles. You can change these font styles for the presentation you're working on by changing font styles on the slide master. For title text, five levels of body text, and footers, you can customize the font type, style, size, and color, and you can add effects such as shadowing or embossing. When you want unique font styles for your title slides (title and subtitle text), change the title master.

Any font changes you have already made to individual slides will be preserved, regardless of changes you make to the slide master or title master.

To change font styles on the slide master

  1. On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Slide Master.
  2. Do one of the following on the slide master:
  • Click the title or level of body text that you want to change.
  • To change footer text, select the default bracketed text.
  1. On the Format menu, click Font.
  2. In the Font dialog box, make the changes you want, and click OK.
  3. To change the font for any other text, repeat steps 2 - 4.
  4. To return to your previous view, on the Master toolbar, click Close.

The font changes should appear in the text on your slides. If no text yet exists for the text level you changed, such as a level three in a bulleted list, you will see the changes when you add text for that text level.

To change font styles on the title master

When you change the title text and first level of body text on the slide master, those styles apply to all titles and the first text level in all your slides. If you want the fonts for your title slide to be different from the rest of your slides, you must change the title and subtitle fonts on the title master. After you change fonts on the title master, the changes are preserved even if you later change fonts on the slide master.

  1. To display the title master, do one of the following:
  • If you are using the Blank Presentation.pot template (the PowerPoint default template): On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Slide Master. On the Insert menu, click New Title Master.
  • If you have applied a design template or content template: On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Title Master.
  1. Do one of the following on the title master:
  • Click the title or subtitle text that you want to change.

Note   By changing font styles on the slide master or title master, you are changing the default styles for the current presentation only. If you want to preserve your font changes for later presentations, you must save the current presentation as a template (.pot file).
