In PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer, you can configure a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) to be a leaf-level KPI, a non-leaf level KPI, or an objective KPI. (For more information about how you can use these different KPI classifications in a scorecard, see Scorecard overview.) To configure a KPI as one of these classifications, you must configure two characteristics: the position of the KPI in the scorecard, and the calculation setting. PerformancePoint Monitoring Server uses the calculation setting to determine the KPI data values and score.
Each of the KPI classifications performs a different role in a scorecard.
- A leaf-level KPI represents the performance of a single measure.
- A non-leaf KPI acts as a heading for a group of leaf-level KPIs. It can also represent a sub-objective of the performance goal that is stated in an objective KPI.
- An objective KPI represents an overall performance goal, and creates a major heading for a group of non-leaf or leaf-level KPIs.
Because each different KPI classification performs a different role, Monitoring Server calculates the scores and data values for each classification in a different way. For example, the score for a leaf-level KPI is a simple percentage of the actual KPI data value compared to its target value. In contrast, the score for a non-leaf KPI represents a summary of the leaf-level KPIs under it, and the scorecard designer must decide what kind of summary value to use.
Note You can change the classification of any KPI at any time by re-configuring it. However, before you can configure a KPI's classification, you must first Create the KPI, and then Configure the KPI.

What do you want to do?
Configure a leaf-level KPI
A leaf-level KPI represents the performance of a single measure. Typically, a leaf-level KPI appears under the heading of an objective or sub-objective (non-leaf) KPI. It is positioned at the lowest level in the scorecard hierarchy.
To configure a leaf-level KPI, do the following:
- In the Workspace Browser, select the KPI that you want to configure. Two tabs appear in the workspace: Editor and Properties.
- Click the Editor tab and then locate the row that contains the Actual KPI values in the Actual and Targets pane.
- Double-click in the Calculation column cell of that row to open the Calculation dialog box.
- Select the Default setting.
Note This setting specifies that when Monitoring Server
displays the finished scorecard, it calculates the KPI score as the percentage of the actual KPI data value compared to its target value.
- Check the Use calculated values of Actual and Target to compute the score check box, and then click OK to close the dialog box.
- Navigate to the scorecard that contains the KPI, and position the KPI at the lowest level of a scorecard hierarchy. If you are not sure how to position the KPI, see Change KPI position in a hierarchy.
More about calculation settings for a leaf-level KPI
The following table shows how calculations settings affect a leaf-level KPI. The Data Mappings column that is referred to in this table appears in the Actual and Targets pane.

Configure a non-leaf KPI
A non-leaf KPI acts as a heading for a group of leaf-level KPIs, and represents a sub-objective of the performance goal stated in an objective KPI. It is positioned at an intermediate level between leaf-level KPIs and an objective KPI.
The score for a non-leaf KPI represents an aggregate value of the leaf-level KPIs that are arranged under it. The calculation setting that you select for this KPI
determines how Monitoring Server
calculates the aggregate of the data values for the leaf-level KPIs. For example, you can decide to have the non-leaf KPI represent the sum of data values for its leaf-level KPIs.
To configure a non-leaf KPI (a sub-objective), do the following:
- In the Workspace Browser, select the KPI that you want to configure. Two tabs appear in the workspace: Editor and Properties.
-
Click the Editor tab and then locate the row that contains the Actual KPI values in the Actual and Targets pane.
- Double-click in the Calculation column cell of that row to open the Calculation dialog box.
- Select the calculation setting that matches the kind of aggregation that you want to use.
Calculation settings for a non-leaf KPI
The following table lists the possible calculations settings for a non-leaf level KPI, and explains how those settings affect the KPI data values and score. Notice that the calculation setting determines the aggregation method that Monitoring Server uses to compute the Actual
values. The calculation setting does not affect the formula that Monitoring Server uses to compute a score.
Note To learn how data values are calculated for the child KPIs that are mentioned in this table, see Configure a leaf-level KPI.

Note When Monitoring Server displays the scorecard that contains this KPI, it first calculates the aggregate of the actual data values for the leaf-level KPIs. Then, Monitoring Server calculates the KPI score as the percentage of the aggregate value compared to the target value.
Example of calculation settings for non-leaf KPIs
The following table shows an example of non-leaf KPIs that use two different calculation settings.
Note For both non-leaf KPIs, the score is the percentage of the actual aggregate value compared to the target value.
-
Increase Sales This non-leaf KPI shows an aggregate value in the Actual column that is the sum of the sales for Store 1 and Store 2. This aggregation uses the Sum of Children setting.
- Reduce Costs This non-leaf KPI shows an aggregate value in the Actual column that is the average of the Cost of Sale reported by Store 1 and by Store 2. This aggregation uses the Average of Children setting.

- Check the Use calculated values of Actual and Target to compute the score check box in the Calculation dialog box, and then click OK to close the dialog box.
- Navigate to the scorecard that contains the KPI, and position the KPI above the leaf-level KPIs that it will aggregate. If you do not know how, see Change KPI position in a hierarchy.
Important Before you decide to aggregate the values of leaf-level KPIs, make sure that the KPIs use the same type of measures, such as all dollar values. Otherwise, the aggregate value that PerformancePoint Monitoring Server calculates will be meaningless. For example, if one leaf-level KPI reports the number of units sold, and another reports the percent of satisfied customers, the aggregate of these two values is meaningless.

Configure an objective KPI
An objective KPI represents an overall performance goal. It is positioned at the highest level in the scorecard hierarchy. You can decide to have an objective KPI display an overall performance rating or
to have it display only the text of the performance goal. If an objective shows a performance rating, it displays a KPI indicator instead of a numeric score.
Note The scorecard user can display the overall score, but the score is not automatically displayed.
More about scoring for objective KPIs
To calculate a score for an objective KPI, Monitoring Server converts all the raw scores of its member KPIs to a single common scale, and then calculates the average of the converted scores. This process is referred to as normalization; the scaled, comparable value is called a normalized score. To learn more about how to calculate normalized values, see
Walkthrough: Calculate normalized scores for KPIs.
To configure an objective KPI, do the following:
- In the Workspace Browser, select the KPI that you want to configure. Two tabs appear in the workspace: Editor and Properties.
- Click the Editor tab and then locate the row that contains the Target KPI values in the Actual and Targets pane.
- Double-click in the Calculation column cell of that row to open the Calculation dialog box.
- Select one of the following options
in the Calculation dialog box:
- To have Monitoring Server calculate a normalized score, select Default.
- To have the objective appear only as a heading in the scorecard, select No Value.
- Clear the Use calculated values of Actual and Target to compute the score check box in the Calculation dialog box, and then click OK to close the dialog box.
- Navigate to the scorecard that contains the KPI, and position the KPI at the highest level in the scorecard, above all the leaf-level and non-leaf KPIs that it represents. If you do not know how, see Change KPI position in a hierarchy.
