Because the PerformancePoint Server suite includes various applications, servers, and tools, its documentation appears on various Microsoft Web sites, each of which supports different parts of the product. In general, PerformancePoint Server content is distributed among six Microsoft Web sites:

  • Office Online — Readme files, Help and How to articles, worksheets, sample guides.
  • TechNet — Planning and Architecture Guides, Deployment Guide, Operations Guides, and other documentation for people who install, configure, and deploy PerformancePoint Server,
  • MSDN — Monitoring SDK and PerformancePoint Expression language reference material.
  • PerformancePoint Server Product Page — General information about the product, support, training, community involvement, PerformancePoint news, and links to other relevant content.
  • Microsoft Download Center— Downloadable PerformancePoint items such as service packs, the Data Import Wizard, and the Scorecard Migration Tool.
  • Microsoft Business Intelligence— Product news, videos, demos, podcasts, white papers, datasheets, Webcasts, virtual labs, and other information about PerformancePoint Server and other Microsoft business intelligence offerings.

 Note   In-product Help is available in each PerformancePoint application and in PerformancePoint Monitoring Server and PerformancePoint Planning Server.

Changes to the PerformancePoint Server product

Microsoft recently announced two major changes that affect the PerformancePoint Server product:

  • As of April 1, 2009, Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 is no longer available for purchase.   When the next version of Microsoft Office is released, the Monitoring and Analytics capabilities of PerformancePoint Server will be called PerformancePoint Services in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and will be included with the enterprise version of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. The Planning capabilities of PerformancePoint Server will not be part of the Microsoft Office 2010 release.

    SharePoint customers who have an enterprise license agreement with software assurance can now access the PerformancePoint Server bits at no additional cost. In-product documentation is included. For more information, see How to get PerformancePoint Server.

  • PerformancePoint Planning source code and project files are now packaged and available in the Financial Planning Accelerator (FPA).   This packaged source code is available on a no-cost, individual license agreement and can be used to support or change PerformancePoint Server Planning functionality. Service packs Microsoft Download Center You can download the service pack from these locations. The sites have an overview of the product, system requirements, and download instructions.
Planning, configuration, and deployment documentation TechNet The PerformancePoint Planning Server Planning & Architecture Guide and the PerformancePoint Monitoring Server Planning & Architecture Guide are designed to help IT administrators make informed preliminary decisions that are necessary to optimally deploy PerformancePoint Planning Server and PerformancePoint Monitoring Server. Information in these guides provides overviews of the client and server components, system requirements, available topologies, scalability options, and security considerations.

The PerformancePoint Server 2007 Deployment Guide contains information about how to install PerformancePoint Server in single-computer and distributed environments, and lists the prerequisites for each scenario. Installation information for both Planning and Monitoring is included. Additionally, the post-installation steps that you must follow to have the system up and running are covered.

The PerformancePoint Planning Server Operations Guide and the PerformancePoint Monitoring Server Operations Guide each contain information about maintaining PerformancePoint Planning Server and PerformancePoint Monitoring Server. Information includes guidance for migrating Planning applications and application data and migrating Monitoring Server data. Also covered: backup, restore, and data mirroring with SQL Server databases that are used with Planning Server and Monitoring Server, and information about the PerformancePoint Planning Command Utility.

The Performance Tuning white paper provides guidance to PerformancePoint Server administrators and IT professionals on Monitoring Server performance capabilities. This includes how server performance is affected by security settings, number of users, scalability, load capacity, and other server performance considerations. Performance considerations for hardware planning, dashboard composition, physical memory, and virtual machines are also discussed.

PPS 2007 Glossary TechNet The PerformancePoint Server glossary defines terminology for all PerformancePoint Server applications and servers.

Sample data Microsoft Download Center The Planning Sample Data Kit includes the Alpine Ski House Sample Application Guide and the Alpine Ski House sample application. You can use this kit as a starting point as you plan your PerformancePoint solution.

ThePerformancePoint Server 2007 Contoso demo kit includes sample data for a fictional organization called Contoso. You can download and use this kit enables to try the Planning and Monitoring capabilities of PerformancePoint Server. This application provides real-world business scenarios on performance management areas, including statutory consolidation, planning, budgeting, forecasting, monitoring, and analyzing performance.

The Monitoring Sample Data Kit includes the Monitoring Sample Guide and a collection of sample dashboards and scorecards. Use this kit for some ideas on how to design your reports and scorecards.

The PerformancePoint Server 2007 Sample Data Kit gives you various industry-specific Monitoring dashboards.

Sample Guides Office Online The Monitoring Sample Guide provides step-by-step directions for configuring and deploying four sample dashboards. After the sample dashboards are deployed, you can explore the scorecards and reports, and conduct analysis by using sample data.

The Alpine Ski House Sample Application Guide provides a conceptual overview of the process that was used to build the Alpine Ski House Sample Application. You can use the information in this document to learn about the high-level requirements and procedures that you must have to successfully implement your own PerformancePoint Planning Server application.

PerformancePoint Server Monitoring Sample Scorecards Office Online This document provides an overview of the Monitoring Server sample scorecard files. It includes 23 different sample scorecards, covering a full range of business scenarios. These sample scorecards do not use external data sources, so they are readily available for you to view.

Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 replaces Business Scorecard Manager 2005. Use the Business Scorecard Manager Migration Tool to migrate your data from Business Scorecard Manager to PerformancePoint Server. However, Microsoft continues to support Business Scorecard Manager. ProClarity

Microsoft acquired the ProClarity Corporation in 2006. Its software is the foundation for the analytic capabilities in PerformancePoint Server. Microsoft continues to support ProClarity Analytics even though much of its functionality is now part of PerformancePoint Server.
