A scorecard displays a collection of key performance indicators (KPIs) that measure progress toward achieving specific goals. The KPIs in a scorecard represent specific, measurable elements of performance, such "Sales for Chicago office" or "Number of customer complaints per day." A scorecard provides a visual representation of performance that can give you a summary of progress at a glance.
You can use the Create a Scorecard wizard to create a scorecard in PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer. Dashboard Designer offers useful tools to help you create scorecards, such as templates that are preset to use data from different kinds of data sources. For example, you can use dimensional data from SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services or SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services. Or, you can use tabular data from SQL Server databases, Microsoft Excel, Excel Services, and Windows SharePoint Server lists. You can even specify fixed values. In addition, to organize your scorecard, you can create objective KPIs that present overall performance goals, and group related KPIs under it.
For more information about scorecards, see Scorecard overview.
What do you want to do?
Select a template and name the scorecard
- On the Create tab in Dashboard Designer, click Scorecard.
-
In the Select a Scorecard Template dialog box, select a category for the scorecard and then select a template from that category.
Scorecard templates
The following table shows the templates available for each category:
| Category |
Template option |
Description |
| Microsoft |
Analysis Services |
Template for KPIs based on multidimensional data in Analysis Services. |
| Standard |
Fixed Values, or Blank |
Templates without pre-set values. When you create a scorecard by using a Standard template, you can configure it to use any KPI that is published by PerformancePoint Monitoring Server. |
| Tabular |
Excel 2007, Excel Services, SQL Server Table, or SharePoint List |
Templates for KPIs based on data from a database table or worksheet. |
- After you make a selection, click OK to close the Select a Scorecard Template dialog box and continue to the Name the Scorecard page of the wizard.
- Type the scorecard name and specify a custom location for the display folder. If desired, select the Grant Read permission to all authenticated users check box. If you do not select the
box, you must configure user permissions on the KPI properties pane when you Configure KPI properties and permissions.
- Click Next to continue to the next page of the wizard.

Select a data source
Note If you selected a template in the Standard category, you do not have to select a data source. Instead, you are ready to skip to the next section and add KPIs to your scorecard.
To select a data source for any one of the other template categories, take the following steps:
- On the Select a Data Source page, select the Workspace tab or the Server tab, depending on the location of the data source that you want to use. If your data source is on Monitoring Server, click Refresh to make sure that the list of options shows the most recent updates.
- Select the data source that you want to use, and then click Next to continue to the next page of the wizard.

Add KPIs to a scorecard with an Analysis Services template
When you create a scorecard by using an Analysis Services template, the wizard guides you through the steps that are required to add KPIs that use data from Analysis Services. As you work through the wizard, you can select KPIs that have been published to PerformancePoint Monitoring Server, or import KPIs that have been specified in an Analysis Services source.
Select one of the following options:
Create KPIs from Analysis Services measures
Select this option to add a KPI that uses data from Analysis Services or other data sources. Complete one of the following two sequences:
- Click Add KPI to add a row to the table. Dashboard Designer automatically populates the new row with a KPI that has been published to Monitoring Server and configured to use an Analysis Services data source.
- (Optional) If you want to re-name the KPI, type a new name for it.
- (Optional) If you want to change the preset configuration settings for this KPI, select new values for Actual, Band Method, and Targets from the drop-down lists. For more information about how to modify these values, see KPI configuration overview.
- To add more KPIs, repeat this process.
- When you finish adding KPIs, click Next to continue to the next page of the wizard.
-- OR --
- Click Select KPI to select a KPI from your workspace or from the list of KPIs that have been published on Monitoring Server. To see a table that shows all the KPIs that are available from your workspace, select the Workspace tab. To see a table that shows all the KPIs that have been published on Monitoring Server, select the Server tab.
- Select one or more KPIs that you want to use.
- When you finish selecting KPIs, click OK to continue to the next screen of the wizard.
Import Analysis Services KPIs
Important If you are using SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services as the data source for your scorecard, you might encounter an error message when you attempt to import KPIs. If that occurs, you can create your KPIs manually. To learn how to do this, see the PerformancePoint team blog post Creating PerformancePoint KPIs based on Analysis Services KPIs.
- Click Select a KPI to open the Select a KPI dialog box.
- Click Refresh, and then select the check box for the KPI that you want to import.
- Repeat to import additional KPIs.
- Click OK to continue to the next page of the wizard.

Add KPIs to a scorecard with a tabular template
When you use a template from the Tabular category, you select a template that uses data from Excel 2007, Excel Services, Microsoft Office SharePoint lists,
Windows SharePoint lists, or from a SQL Server table. Select one of these options:
Add a KPI
- Click Add KPI to add a row to the table. When you add a row to the Add a KPI table, Dashboard Designer automatically populates the new row with a KPI. The KPI has been published in Monitoring Server and configured to use a tabular data source.
- (Optional) If you want to re-name the KPI, type a new name.
Select a KPI
- Click Select KPI to select a KPI from your workspace or from the list of KPIs that have been published on Monitoring Server. To see a table that shows all the KPIs that are available from your workspace, select the Workspace tab. To see a table that shows all the KPIs that have been published on Monitoring Server, select the Server tab.
- Select one or more KPIs that you want to use.
- When you finish selecting KPIs, click OK to continue to the next page of the wizard.

Add measure filters to the scorecard
When you add a measure filter to a scorecard, Monitoring Server limits the data that it processes to the dimension members that satisfy the filter criteria. For example, you might use a measure filter that includes sales totals for the most recent month, and omits all previous sales amounts.
If you do not want to add measure filters, click Next on the Add Measure Filters page to finish the wizard. If you want to add measure filters, select the Add measure filters check box, and then take these steps:
- Click Select Dimension. Select the dimension that includes the member measures that you want to use, and then click OK.
- Click Select Member to select dimension members for the Actual measure filter. Click OK.
-
Click Select Member to select the dimension members for the Target measure filter. Click OK.
- In the Enter a formula for Actual measure filter text box, type the formula for the filter that will select the Actual KPI values.
Important The formula that you enter must use the special syntax for Time Intelligence expressions. In addition, you must Configure time and aggregation settings for the data source.
- Type the formula that defines the time filter that you want to use to select Target values in the Enter a formula for Target measure filter text box.
- Click Next to continue to the next page of the wizard.

Add member columns to the scorecard
This option is available only for scorecards that include one or more measure filters. If your scorecard does not use measure filters, or if you do not want to add columns for dimension members, click Finish on the Add Member Columns page to exit the wizard.
Use this option to add columns for different measure filters. For example, you might add a column that contains data from the previous year, or separate columns for each quarter of a year. To learn how to add measure filters to a scorecard, see the previous procedure in this topic, Add measure filters to the scorecard.
If you want to add columns for dimension members, select the Add column members check box, and then take these steps.
- Click Select Dimension.
- Select the dimension that contains the members for which you want to add columns (typically time).
- Click OK.
- Click Select Member.
- Select the specific members that you want to display in the columns.
- When you finish selecting the members that you want to use, click OK.
- Click Finish to exit the wizard.
- On the confirmation page, click Close.
