How do I export data with an Outbound rule?

You can export your PerformancePoint Server data and definitions, and then make them available to an extended business community by using an Outbound rule, a special-purpose rule that specifies the data that will be exported.

After you run the Outbound rule, applications outside PerformancePoint Server can use your data. For example, you might have a customer who wants to use new fact data in SAP at the end of a budget cycle, or a customer who wants a catalog listing of the data results after you process the data in Planning Business Modeler.

When you run an Outbound rule set in a Data Export job, Planning Business Modeler stores a log of the exported data at the destination site.

Step 1: Prepare for data export

To export data from Planning Business Modeler, you must have appropriate permissions. You must also know the specific name of the destination server so you can provide that information when needed.

In addition, you must develop a specific description of the data that you want to export. It will help you create a correct scope for the Outbound rule.

Task Description
Verify user permissions. To run a data export job, you must have Data Administrator permissions.
Find the Data Destination name in the table on the Model Properties tab. A Data Destination is a server site, specified by a data administrator, that can receive exported data. Determine the name of the Data Destination that a Data Administrator configured in the PerformancePoint Planning Administration Console, and then use that value to set the Export Location model property.
Identify the source data dimensions. Determine the scope of the source data. When you create a scope for an Outbound rule, you must explicitly specify the scope for each dimension in the model.

Step 2: Configure model properties

Planning Business Modeler uses certain model properties to configure the required settings for export.

Task Description
Open the model site To work with the dimensions and rules of a model, you must open the model site.
Set model properties
  • Set the Enable model export property to TRUE.
  • Set the Export Location property to the name of the Data Destination that was set by the Data Administrator.

Step 3: Create the outbound rule and rule set

An Outbound rule contains the specifications of the data that will be exported. This is one of the special-purpose rules that Planning Business Modeler supports, and must be created in a Outbound rule set.

Task Description
Create an Outbound rule Before you can use an Outbound rule, the rule must belong to an Outbound rule set. If your model contains an Outbound rule set, it should contain the rule you will create. If your model does not contain an Outbound rule set, you must create one before you can create an Outbound rule.
Define the SCOPE statement Use the Define Scopes pane to specify the source dimensions that you want to export.

Step 4: Update the model

Task Description
Validate the rule Check the syntax and semantics of the rule, and verify that the dimensions and program elements in the rule are valid.
Save the model To save a business rule, you must save the model.
Deploy the rule Make the rule available to users in Planning Business Modeler and PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel.

Step 5: Run a data export job

Define and schedule a job task To run an outbound rule set, include the rule set in a Data Export job, and schedule the job.
