Share a dimension

When a dimension is shared, PerformancePiont Planning Business Modeler makes its members and member sets available for use in other model subsites of the parent model site. A dimension should be shared when the dimension will provide a common template to models at the model site and at its model subsites. For example, the Time dimension tracks the fiscal calendar of a company, and is therefore needed for models at every level of an application.

Dimensions that are not shared are only available to the model site in which they are created. You cannot share part of a dimension while keeping other parts of the dimension private. For an overview of dimensions, and links to procedures that describe how to perform tasks that are related to dimensions, see Dimensions in Planning Business Modeler.

Considerations about shared dimensions

There are several considerations for members and member sets in shared dimensions:

  • If you create additional members for a shared dimension in a model subsite (a subsite descendant), those members will not be visible to the ancestor model sites. However, they will be visible to descendants of the model subsite in which they were created.
  • You cannot extend a member set from a shared dimension in a descendant subsite.
  • You can create a new member set that contains members of a shared dimension. The resulting member set will be available to the model subsite and any descendants of the model subsite. However, the member set will not be available to the ancestor model site.

For example, an apparel company that sells shirts, pants, and shoes might have a shared Product dimension. An analyst in the footwear division might want create a local forecast featuring only shoe products. Because the Product dimension is shared, its members and member sets are available for the analyst to use in the local forecast. To limit the local forecast, the analyst just has to create a new member set that contains only the members that pertain to the local forecast.
