Add an element to a dashboard using Dashboard Designer

You can use PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer to create, edit, and deploy dashboards in your organization. To begin, you create individual dashboard elements, such as reports, scorecards, dashboard pages, and filters, and then publish those elements to PerformancePoint Monitoring Server. Next, you add one or more of those elements to a dashboard. Finally, you preview your dashboard, and then deploy it to a SharePoint site.

Note   Before you add an element to a dashboard, make sure that the element has been published to Monitoring Server. (To learn more about how to publish an element, see the section Get more information.)

What do you want to do?

Verify that you have the prerequisites in place

Before you can add a particular element to a dashboard page, that element must be published to Monitoring Server. In addition, you must have at least Read permissions for that element. To learn more about how to perform either task, see the section Get more information; otherwise, do the following to verify that you have these prerequisites in place:

  1. In Dashboard Designer, click the Home tab, and then click Publish All to refresh the list of elements that are saved to Monitoring Server.
  2. In the Workspace Browser, click an element category, such as Dashboards, Reports, or Scorecards. The center pane of the workspace displays two tabs: Server and Workspace.

The Server tab lists all the dashboard elements in that category that you and other dashboard authors have published to Monitoring Server. The Workspace tab lists all the dashboard elements in that category that you have created or opened in your workspace.

Note   For more information about how to create a dashboard element, see the section Get more information.

  1. Double-click the element that you want to include in your dashboard to open its workspace. In the center pane of the workspace, click the Properties tab. In the Permissions section, verify that you and the dashboard consumers who will be using that element have at least Read permissions.

If you do not have Editor permissions for an element that you want to modify, you can save that element to a different location, and then republish it to Monitoring Server. By default, you have Editor permissions for any element that you create or publish. For more information, see Create or edit properties in Dashboard Designer.

Add a report or a scorecard to a dashboard page

After you or other dashboard authors create and publish a report or a scorecard in Dashboard Designer, you can add it to an appropriate dashboard.

Note   If you add an individual report to more than one dashboard, make sure that the appropriate permissions have been assigned for each report or scorecard so that dashboard users can view it. To learn more about permissions, see Understanding roles and permissions in Dashboard Designer.

  1. In Dashboard Designer, click the Home tab, and then click Refresh to refresh the list of elements that are saved to Monitoring Server. In the Workspace Browser, click Dashboards.

The center pane of the workspace displays two tabs: Server and Workspace. The Server tab lists all the dashboards that you and other dashboard authors have published to Monitoring Server. The Workspace tab lists all the dashboards that you have created or opened in your workspace.

Click the Workspace tab to view the list of dashboards that are available in your workspace. If the dashboard that you want to change is not listed, click the Server tab, and then double-click the dashboard to open it in your workspace.
  2. In the center pane of the workspace, click the Editor tab. If your dashboard contains more than one page, examine the Pages section, and then click the page that you want to modify.

Make sure the Details pane is open. (The Details pane is located on the right side of the workspace. If you cannot see it, click the double arrows that are located to the right of the center pane.)
  3. In the Details pane, click to expand the lists of reports and scorecards that are available. Locate the report or the scorecard that you want to add, and then drag it to the dashboard zone where you want it to appear on the dashboard page. Repeat for each report or scorecard that you want to include in your dashboard.
  4. Click the Home tab, and then click Publish All to save your changes to Monitoring Server. From here, you can add another page to your dashboard, add filters, or preview your dashboard.

Add another page to a dashboard

As you add reports, scorecards, and other elements to your dashboard, you might decide that the design is too complex and cluttered for a single page, and so decide to organize related information into separate dashboard pages.

  2. In the center pane of the workspace pane, click the Editor tab. In the Pages section, click New Page to open the Select a Dashboard Page Template dialog box. Click the template that you want to use and then click OK to open the new page.
  3. In the Name column, type a descriptive name for your dashboard page. To learn more about how to change the layout of a dashboard page or any of its zones, see Edit a dashboard page in Dashboard Designer.

Note   If you want to modify your dashboard page, be sure to do so before you add any elements or publish the dashboard to Monitoring Server. For example, you might want to resize, add, or remove dashboard zones, or adjust the size of an individual element in a dashboard zone.

To take a specific example, suppose that you create a dashboard and publish it to Monitoring Server. Sometime later, you decide to add another page to your dashboard and to resize one or more of the dashboard zones. In that case, you should adjust each dashboard zone before you add any elements to that zone or republish your dashboard. If you add a report or a scorecard to a zone, publish the dashboard, and then attempt to adjust your zone settings, Dashboard Designer applies those new settings to the way reports or scorecards fit within each zone; not to the way dashboard zones are configured in the dashboard page.

  1. From here, you can add reports or scorecards, add filters, or preview your dashboard.

Add one or more filters to a dashboard

After you or other dashboard authors create and publish a dashboard that contains one or more reports and scorecards in Dashboard Designer, you might want to add one or more filters to your dashboard.

Note   A dashboard filter applies to an individual dashboard page. If your dashboard contains multiple pages and you want to use the same filter for all of the pages, you must add the filter to each page by using the following procedure.

For more information about how to create a dashboard filter, see How do I create a dashboard filter in Dashboard Designer?

The Details pane is located on the right side of the workspace. If you cannot see it, click the double arrows that are located to the right of the center pane.
  3. In the Details pane, click to expand the lists of filters that are available. Locate the filter that you want to add and then drag it to the dashboard zone where you want it to reside. Repeat for each additional filter that you want to include in the dashboard.
  4. Click the Home tab, and then click Publish All to save your changes to Monitoring Server.
  5. Connect your filters to reports or scorecards in your dashboard. For more information, see Link filters to scorecards and reports.
