About the contact index bar in Japanese Outlook

The feature or some of the options described in this Help topic are available only if support for Japanese is enabled through Microsoft Office Language Settings.

You can attach furigana to a contact's last name. In Contact Card view (the default view) or Detailed Contact Card view, an index bar with tabs marked with numbers, the letters a through z, and the characters a through wa is displayed vertically along the right edge of the view. If you click a tab on the index, the cards for contacts whose last names begin with that letter or character are displayed. For example, if you click ka on the index, the contact card for KabayamaKabayama (with a phonetic guide of kabayamakabayama kabayama kabayama) is displayed.
