How to remove unsafe attachments

You have inserted an attachment file type that is blocked by Microsoft Outlook for security reasons. These file types, such as .exe, .bat, .scr, and .js, are blocked because they can potentially contain viruses.

Recipients who use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or earlier versions of Outlook that have been updated with a security patch will not be able to open the attachment. By removing the attachments with these file extensions from your message before you send your message, the recipients can save and open your attachments.

ShowDelete an attachment from the Attachments box

  1. Right-click the attachment.
  2. On the shortcut menu (shortcut menu: A menu that shows a list of commands relevant to a particular item. To display a shortcut menu, right-click an item or press SHIFT+F10.), click Remove.

ShowDelete an attachment from the message body

  1. Click the attachment.
  2. Press DELETE.

ShowTip

If the message is in Rich Text format, you can place the cursor to the right of the attachment, and then press BACKSPACE twice.

Note  If the message is in HTML format, attachments appear in the Attachments box, located below the Subject box. If the message is in Rich Text Format, attachments appear in the body of the message.
