Delete a digital ID

Deleting your digital ID in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 removes your private keys from your computer. Even though your private keys are password-protected, this is an extra safety precaution that you can take if you are selling or donating your computer — or letting someone else use it.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Trust Center, and then click E-mail Security.
  2. Under Digital IDs (Certificates), click Import/Export.
  3. Click Export your Digital ID to a file.
  4. Click Select, click the digital ID that you want to remove, and then click OK.
  5. In the Filename box, enter the path and name for the file, or click Browse.
  6. In the Password box, type the password for the file.
  7. In the Confirm box, enter the password again.
  8. Select the Delete Digital ID from system check box.
  9. Click OK. Outlook creates a file in the location that you specified in step 5 with one of the following file extensions: .pfx, .epf, or .p12.

  10. Delete the file that Outlook created in the previous step.

Important   After you remove your private keys, you will no longer be able to use the digital ID that you removed to send signed messages or open encrypted (encrypt: The process of converting plain, readable text into cipher (scrambled) text. The sender uses the recipient's public key to encrypt (lock) the e-mail message and attachments.) mail on that computer unless you import the keys back in.
