Change Cached Exchange Mode connection setting

This feature requires you to be using a Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account in Cached Exchange Mode.

  1. On the File menu, point to Cached Exchange Mode.
  2. Select one of the following:
    • Download Headers and then Full Items   Microsoft Outlook downloads all headers first, and then complete items, including attachments. Use this setting to quickly see all item headers. You can click a header and the full item will be downloaded immediately.

    • Download Full Items    Outlook downloads the header, body, and attachments of e-mail items at the same time. Use this option when you have a direct network connection with your main computer or when you are using a continuous dial-up connection.

    • Download Headers    Outlook downloads headers only. The full item, including attachments, is available on demand when you preview or open the item. Use this setting when you want the amount of data transferred between Outlook and the computer running Exchange server to be as small as possible.

  3. If you want Outlook to download only headers when a slow connection is detected, select On Slow Connections Download Headers Only. In addition, the Offline Address Book will not be downloaded. The body and any associated attachments are downloaded only when requested by you, or as necessary for synchronization with personal digital assistants (PDAs), auto archiving, and some client-side rules. Use this setting when using dial-up connections or cellular wireless with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) connections to minimize network traffic when there is a slow or expensive connection.

Notes

  • Download Headers followed by the Full Item and Download Headers are available only when you are using a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 e-mail account. For more information on the version of Exchange server you are connecting to, contact your Exchange server administrator.
  • You do not have to restart Outlook after changing the Cached Exchange Mode settings.
