Multi-line layout is only available in a table view type (view type: The basic structure of a view. When you create a view, you must first select one of five view types (table, timeline, day/week/month, card, or icon) to determine how information will be arranged and formatted in your new view.).
Change the number of characters displayed before multi-line layout switches to single-line layout
You can specify the width (in number of characters) of the message list before Microsoft Outlook switches to single-line layout.
- On the View menu, point to Arrange By, and then click Custom.
- Click Other Settings.
- Under Other Options, select the Use multi-line layout in widths smaller than n characters check box, and type the number you want for n.
Specify the number of lines that display in multi-line layout
If the message list in multi-line layout is not wide enough to display all the column headings (column heading: The horizontal bar at the top of one column in a table. There are multiple column headings in the column heading row.) about an item (item: An item is the basic element that holds information in Outlook (similar to a file in other programs). Items include e-mail messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, journal entries, notes, posted items, and documents.), pausing on the item will display a ScreenTip (ScreenTips: Notes that appear on the screen to provide information about a toolbar button, tracked change, or comment, or to display a footnote or endnote. ScreenTips also display the text that will appear if you choose to insert a date or AutoText entry.) containing all this information, plus any additional fields that are displayed in the single-line layout for this view.
- On the View menu, point to Arrange By, and then click Custom.
- Click Fields.
- In the Maximum number of lines in multi-line mode box, enter the number you want.
Show or hide group headings
- On the View menu, point to Arrange By, and then click Show in Groups.
