Copy Outlook contacts to MSN Hotmail contacts

Applies to
Microsoft Office Outlook® 2003
Microsoft Outlook® 2000 and 2002

You can use Outlook to work with your MSN® and MSN Hotmail® e-mail accounts. MSN Premium Services subscribers can use the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for MSN for even greater reliability and functionality, including access and synchronization of e-mail messages, contacts, calendar, tasks, and notes.

If you do not have the Outlook Connector for MSN, you can import Outlook 2000, Outlook 2002, and Outlook 2003 contacts into MSN Hotmail. Before you can copy your Outlook contacts to MSN Hotmail, you must first export your contacts to a comma separated values (.csv) file.

Note   If you are using Outlook 2002 SP2 or later and you subscribe to an MSN Premium Service, we recommend that you use the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for MSN, which provides more reliable access to your e-mail messages, as well as your calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes attached to your account.

  1. In Outlook, on the File menu, click Import and Export.
  2. Under Choose an action to perform, click Export to a file, and then click Next.
  3. Under Create a file of type, click Comma Separated Values (Windows), and then click Next.

Note   If you receive the dialog box This feature is currently not installed. Would you like to install it now?, click Yes.

  4. Under Select folder to export from, click Contacts or the folder that contains the contacts that you want to export, and then click Next.
  5. Under Save exported file as, click Browse.
  6. Go to the folder where you want to save the file, and then, in the Browse dialog box, in the File name box, type a name for the file.
  7. Click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
  8. Open your Web browser, and sign in to MSN Hotmail.
  9. Click the Contacts tab.
  10. Under Tools, click Import Contacts.
  11. Click Outlook 2000/XP/2003, and then click Next.
  12. Click Browse, go to and click the .csv file that you created in steps 1 through 7, click Open, and then click Finish.
