With AutoPreview you can quickly scan the beginning of email messages without opening them. AutoPreview includes the first three lines of a message. The message sender name, date, and subject also appears.
Turn on AutoPreview
Use AutoPreview in the Inbox
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click Change View, and then click Preview.
Note The Reading Pane (Reading Pane: A window in Outlook where you can preview an item without opening it. To display the item in the Reading Pane, click the item.) is turned off in this view. To turn on the Reading Pane, on the View tab, in the Current View group, click View Settings, and then click Other Settings. Under Reading Pane, click Right or Bottom.
By default, AutoPreview is turned on only for unread messages. However, you can turn on AutoPreview for all messages.
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click View Settings, and then click Other Settings.
- Under AutoPreview, click Preview all items.
Use AutoPreview in other mail folders
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click Change View, and then click Preview.
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click Change View, and then click Apply Current View to Other Mail Folders.
- Select the checkboxes for the folders that you want to apply the view.
Tip Select the Apply view to subfolders check box to include all subfolders of the folders that you select.

Turn off AutoPreview
Turn off AutoPreview in the selected folder
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click Change View, and then click Compact. Compact is the default Outlook view.
Turn off AutoPreview in multiple folders
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click Change View, and then click Compact. Compact is the default Outlook view.
- On the View tab, in the Current View group, click Change View, and then click Apply Current View to Other Mail Folders.
- Select the checkboxes for the folders that you want to apply the view.
Tip Select the Apply view to subfolders check box to include all subfolders of the folders that you select.
