Change the color of existing notes

To change the color of a note, assign it a color category (color category: A keyword or phrase with an associated color that helps you keep track of items, such as messages, contacts, and appointments. You can use color categories to easily find, sort, filter, or group items.). Multiple color categories can be assigned to a note, but the note will appear in the color of the last category applied.

Assign a color category to an open note

  • Click the note icon Icon image, click Categorize, and then do one of the following:
    • Click a color category.
    • Click All Categories to open the Color Categories dialog box, and then select the check box next to the color category that you want to assign.

Assign a color category to a closed note

You can assign a color category to a note that is not open. In Notes, use either the List or Icon view (view: Views give you different ways to look at the same information in a folder by putting it in different arrangements and formats. There are standard views for each folder. You can also create custom views.).

  1. Click the note to which you want to assign a color category.
  2. On the Home tab, in the Tags group, click Categorize, and then do one of the following:
    • Click a color category.
    • Click All Categories to open the Color Categories dialog box, and then select the check box next to the color category that you want to assign.

Note    To assign a category or color in Notes List view, you can right-click in the Categories column of the note to which you want to assign a color category. Clicking in the Categories column removes the last color assigned to the note.
