Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) provides the latest updates to Microsoft® Office XP. Office XP SP-1 contains the latest security features, and stability and performance improvements. Some of the fixes included with SP-1 were previously released as separate updates. This service pack combines them into one package and includes other changes designed to help improve the reliability and performance of your Office XP applications.
Office XP SP-1 addresses the issues described in the following Microsoft Security Bulletins:
This service pack includes all previously released updates for Office XP:
- Outlook 2002 Update: June 21 2001
- Word 2002 Update: June 21 2001
- Publisher 2002 Update: June 21 2001
- Office Web Components Update: August 16 2001
- Outlook 2002 Update: August 16 2001
- Office XP Activation Update: October 4 2001
- Outlook 2002 Update: October 4 2001

Toolbox Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) consists of two Windows Installer patch files (MSP files) packaged in one self-extracting executable file (Oxpsp1a.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office XP Resource Kit Downloads page.
Office XP SP-1 installs successfully even if one or more of the previously released updates were installed on your computer.
SP-1 for Office XP also includes stability improvements developed as a result of user input from the Windows Online Crash Analysis in Office XP as well as Microsoft Product Support feedback.
All public updates released after Office XP SP-1 will require the installation of SP-1.
Service Pack 1 for Office XP applies to the following Office XP suites and stand-alone applications:
- Microsoft Office XP Professional
- Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage
- Microsoft Office XP Standard
- Microsoft Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers
- Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition
- Microsoft Word 2002
- Microsoft Excel 2002
- Microsoft Outlook® 2002
- Microsoft PowerPoint® 2002
- Microsoft FrontPage® 2002
- Microsoft Access 2002
- SharePoint™ Team Services from Microsoft
- Microsoft Publisher 2002

If you are running Microsoft Windows® 2000, installing Office XP SP-1 might require you to restart your computer. To prevent this restart, upgrade to Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 available from the Download Center on Microsoft.com.
Note To ensure the integrity of your Office installation, Windows Installer may require access to the Office product CD or your network installation location during the installation process.
For more information on these issues, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Overview of the Office XP Service Pack 1.
SP-1 and the Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack
If you are applying Office XP SP-1 to a configuration that uses an Office XP Multilingual User Interface Pack, you will need the following updates to achieve complete SP-1 functionality:
- Office XP Update: Service Pack 1 (SP-1)
- Office XP Service Pack 1 for Multilingual User Interface Pack
For information on Office XP Service Pack 1 for Multilingual User Interface Pack, see Office XP Service Pack 1 for Multilingual User Interface Pack.
Applying the SP-1 administrative update to an administrative installation point
The administrative update files for Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP-1) are Microsoft Windows Installer patches (MSP files) you apply to your administrative share by using a command line with specific parameters. The following table lists the MSP files included in the SP-1 update.
| MSP file name |
Description |
| MAINSP1_Admin.msp |
Updates core components for Office XP. |
| OWC10SP1_Admin.msp |
Updates Office Web Components. |
Note For best results, the update should be applied from the computer that contains the administrative installation point. Make sure the files on the administrative installation point are not in use when you apply the update. Copy the administrative image to backup installation points after backing up any custom transform, Setup.ini, or other custom files.
To apply the Office XP SP-1 update to an administrative installation point
- Download Oxpsp1a.exeand double-click the file name to extract the MSP files.
- Connect to the administrative installation point.
Note that you must have write access to the administrative installation point on the server and the appropriate privileges to carry out the task.
- On the Start menu, click Run and then type the command line for Windows Installer with the appropriate options for the SP-1 update. Use the following syntax:
[start] msiexec /p [path\name of update MSP file]
/a [path\name of MSI file]
SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE /qb /L* [path\name of log file]
You must run the command line separately for each MSP file you apply to the administrative installation point — you cannot reference multiple MSP files on the same command line. The following table describes the command-line options.
| Command-line option |
Description |
| [start] |
Required only for Microsoft Windows 98 systems where Msiexec is not directly in the path. |
| Msiexec |
Executable file name for Windows Installer. |
| /p |
Enables Windows Installer to apply an update to an existing installation. |
| [path\name of update MSP file] |
Path and file name of the MSP file for the update. |
| /a |
Enables Windows Installer to perform an administrative installation of a product on a network share. |
| SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE |
Directs Windows Installer to create all file names and folders with MS-DOS-compatible file names, as used on Office 2000 Disc 1. Required when you run Windows Installer from the command line. |
| /qb |
Sets the user interface to the basic level (simple progress and error handling). |
| /L* |
Turns on logging and sets a path for the log file. Append an asterisk (*) to log all information. |
| [path\name of log file] |
Path and file name of the Windows Installer log file. |
Updating client computers from an administrative installation point
After you update your administrative installation point, you must recache and reinstall Office XP on client computers that use the administrative image. Any new client installations from the administrative image will automatically include the updated version of Office XP.
To update an existing client installation from an administrative installation point, run the following command line on the client computer:
start msiexec /i [path to updated .msi file on the
administrative image] REINSTALL=[list of features]
REINSTALLMODE=vomus /qb
You can run this command line by creating a logon script, distributing it as a batch file, deploying it using Systems Management Server, or using other software installation tools. The following table describes the command-line options.
| Command-line option |
Description |
| [start] |
Required only for Windows 98 systems where Msiexec is not directly in the path. |
| Msiexec |
Executable file name for Windows Installer. |
| /I |
Enables Windows Installer to apply an update to an existing installation. |
| [path to updated .msi file on the administrative image] |
Path and file name of the Microsoft Windows Installer package (MSI file) on the administrative installation point. |
| REINSTALL=ALL |
Specifies that you want to reinstall all applications on the administrative image. |
| REINSTALLMODE=vomus |
Triggers the recache and reinstallation on the client computer. |
| /qb |
Run quietly and suppress the End User License Agreement dialog box. |

Optionally, you can substitute the parameter REINSTALL=ALL to reinstall all Office XP components on the client computer.
Note If you originally installed Office XP on a client computer from an administrative installation point, you must follow the recache and reinstall procedure described previously to update that client. If you update the client directly by using the end-user patch from the Office Update Web site, the client and administrative images become out-of-sync, which may cause future updates to fail.
As an alternative, you can deploy the Office XP SP-1 update within your organization by distributing the version for client computers from local servers. For more information about this strategy, see Distributing Office 2000 Client Updates to Users.
Applying the SP-1 administrative update under Windows 2000
If the administrative installation point and all client computers are running Microsoft Windows 2000, you can use IntelliMirror® technology to manage the installation of the update.
Note Be sure to test all software updates in a controlled setting before modifying your administrative installation point or deploying the new version throughout your organization.
To deploy a QFE fix or update under Windows 2000
- Apply the updates (MSP files) to the original Office administrative installation point.
You must to run the command line separately for each MSP file you apply to the administrative installation point — you cannot reference multiple MSP files on the same command line.
- Open the Software Installation snap-in within the Group Policy Object (GPO) that you are using to manage the existing Office installation.
- In the details pane, right-click the Office package, point to All Tasks, and click Redeploy application.
Note that you can redeploy a package only if it is being managed by Group Policy — that is, only if you originally installed it by using IntelliMirror software installation and maintenance, or if you brought it into a managed state under Windows 2000.
The next time the Group Policy is applied to the designated users or computers, the updated files are copied to their computers.
Files changed by the SP-1 administrative update
The following table lists the files changed by the SP-1 administrative update. If you need to confirm whether a share has been updated, you can check the related file version number.
