Access 2002 Runtime Security Patch: KB827430

The Access 2002 Runtime Security Patch: KB827430 offers the latest updates related to stability and security for the Microsoft® Access 2002 Runtime. This update helps to address a flaw in the Microsoft Access Snapshot Viewer that could allow arbitrary code to run when viewing a maliciously crafted document. This update helps to resolve the vulnerability so Microsoft Access Snapshot Viewer files are handled appropriately.

Further, this update helps to address a flaw in the way Microsoft Office uses Visual Basic® for Applications (VBA) to check document properties when opening a maliciously crafted document. This flaw could allow arbitrary code to run when a user opens a specially crafted document from an attacker. This update helps to mitigate that vulnerability so files opened using VBA are handled appropriately.

The Access 2002 Runtime Security Patch: KB827430 is part of Microsoft's continuing effort to provide the latest product updates to customers.

Toolbox   The full-file version of Access 2002 Runtime Security Patch: KB827430 consists of one Windows Installer patch file (MSP format) packaged in a self-extracting executable (access2002-runtime-kb827430-fullfile-enu.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office XP Resource Kit Downloads page.

Note    The full-file version of the Access 2002 Runtime update will install successfully on original release versions of Access 2002 Runtime.

Strategies for updating your Access 2002 Runtime installations

Apply the binary (client) version of the Access 2002 Runtime update directly to users' computers within your organization. Details on this strategy are covered in the topic Distributing Office 2000 Client Updates to Users. The client version of the Access 2002 Runtime Security Patch: KB827430 update is available from the Download Center.

Note    To install client update files, you must be running Windows Installer version 2.0 or later on your computers. Windows Installer 2.0 is included by default in Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000 Service Pack 3. For organizations running a previous version of Windows, it is available as a separate download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Windows Installer 2.0 for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME

Windows Installer 2.0 for Windows NT 4.0 (SP-6) and Windows 2000

Another option is to apply the full-file updates directly to client computers. This method is an efficient way to ensure that all users have the most current version of the software when you do not know which updates users have applied. In addition, users can apply a full-file update even if they do not have access to the administrative source.

Details on this strategy, and a more complete comparison of the different update methods, can be found in the article Strategies for Updating Office 2000 Installations.
