The package definition files used by Microsoft® Systems Management Server to distribute Microsoft Office XP have been revised for deployments on client computers running the Microsoft Windows® XP operating system.
The package definition files have been consolidated into two core files for Office XP: Off2002.SMS, which covers all product suites, and LPK2002.SMS, which covers the Office XP Multilingual User Interface Packs. Office XP supports only SMS 2.0.
Toolbox The two package definition files (SMS format) are packaged in a self-extracting executable (Smspdf.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office XP Resource Kit Downloads page.
To install the PDF files, download the self-extracting executable (EXE) file to your computer and double-click the file name to extract the two PDF files. The installation program will prompt you to specify a location for the files.
In addition to the updated PDF files, an update is available that adds Windows XP to the list of specified platforms SMS can use to limit software distribution. When initially installed, SMS 2.0 Service Pack 3 software distribution cannot limit advertised programs to Windows XP–based client computers, because Windows XP is not defined in SMS as a specified platform.
To add Windows XP to the list of specified platforms, apply the SMS update referred to in the Knowledge Base article How to Obtain the Latest Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack. The list of specified platforms can be seen in the SMS Administrator console on the Requirements tab of the Program Properties dialog box.
