Applying a Configuration Maintenance File

Important information about the placement of configuration maintenance files for users of Microsoft® Windows NT® 4.0 and Microsoft Windows® 2000 operating systems was omitted in the following documentation: Custom Maintenance Wizard online Help, and the electronic version of the Office Resource Kit included with Microsoft Office XP enterprise editions and on the companion CD with the printed Office Resource Kit.

The information concerns this point: To apply a configuration maintenance file (CMW file) on a computer whose user does not have administrative privileges on Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, the Office XP administrator must place the CMW file in a folder named CMW directly under the root of the administrative installation point. After a maintenance file is properly stored on the administrative installation point, a user can apply the maintenance file to the computer.

An alternative is for the administrator to set and enable the system policy Allow CMW files at any location to be applied, which is available in the Office10.adm policy template.

The administrator should also put the Custom Maintenance Wizard (maintwiz.exe) in the CMW folder because maintwiz.exe is usually not distributed to users as part of an Office deployment. Putting maintwiz.exe in the CMW folder enables users who have user privileges on the local computer to access the CMW file.

Command lines for applying a CMW file

There are several command lines administrators can use to implement maintenance changes. If maintwiz.exe and the CMW files are in the CMW folder directly below the root of the administrative installation point, and the administrative installation point is the current folder, use this command line:

maintwiz /c CMWFile.CMW

The above scenario is recommended. However, if you store and run maintwiz.exe from a folder other than the CMW folder, use this command line:

maintwiz /c <UNC or Drive Alias>\CMW\CMWFile.CMW

If maintwiz.exe is run from a folder other than the CMW folder and the CMW file is not in the CMW folder, set the system policy Allow CMW file at any location to be applied and use this command line:

<path to maintwiz>\maintwiz /c <path to maintenance file>CMWFile.CMW
