Office System Policies

Each system policies template (ADM template) available with the Microsoft Office XP Resource Kit provides a selection of customizable registry entries. Some of the settings you can change are listed in this topic. To see the possible range of values for these policies, open the ADM template with a text editor (such as Notepad) and examine the listed parameter boundaries, or run the System Policy Editor and examine the work area for each policy. For text boxes requesting file or path information where you must provide a string value, be sure to carefully provide the text using appropriate syntax.

Caution    Setting the Windows Installer system policies such as Always install with elevated privileges, Enable user to browse for source while elevated, Enable user to use media source while elevated, and Enable user to patch elevated products allows a user without administrator rights to the computer to install any Windows Installer package. The installation runs with elevated privileges, and the user has unlimited access to system files and the registry. Setting this policy leaves the computer highly vulnerable, potentially allowing an attacker to run malicious code on the computer. Using these policies to elevate any Office or Office-related installation is not recommended.
