Step by Step: Deploy Office 2003 with OneNote 2003

You can install Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft OneNote 2003, including customizations and updates, throughout your organization at the same time. The most efficient method is to create a master Office 2003 installation and modify the core Setup settings file (Setup.ini) to include OneNote, OneNote customizations, and software updates for both Office and OneNote. The result is a single, integrated deployment process.

Note   Using Setup.ini to chain additional installations requires that you have an enterprise edition of Office 2003.

Steps Reference

checkbox

Copy the Office 2003 CD to a shared folder on the network. This step creates a compressed installation image.

Taking Advantage of a Local Installation Source

checkbox

Copy the OneNote 2003 CD to another location on the network. Rename the OneNote Setup.exe file (located at the root of the OneNote installation folder structure) to OneSetup.exe. Rename the OneNote Setup.ini file (located in the Files\Setup folder on the installation image) to OneSetup.ini.

Note   If you are installing from the Select CD, each product already has unique names for its corresponding Setup.exe and Setup.ini files. You can drag both the Office and OneNote installation files to the same installation image.

checkbox

Copy the OneNote installation files to the Office 2003 installation image, overwriting any installation files that already exist.

checkbox

Create a transform (MST file) that captures customizations you want to make to the core Office installation. Store the MST file in the same folder as the core Office MSI file.

See Creating a transform using the Custom Installation Wizard in Methods of Customizing Office.

checkbox

Create another MST file that captures customizations you want to make to the OneNote installation. Store that MST file in the same folder as the OneNote MSI file.

checkbox

Open the Office 2003 Setup.ini file and specify MST1=MST file name in the [MST section].

Setup Settings File

checkbox

In the [ChainedInstall_1] section of Setup.ini, add the OneNote package (MSI file). Specify the task type as MSI. If you created an MST file for OneNote, specify it in this section as MST=MST file name. If the MST file is in the same folder as the OneNote MSI file, you do not need to specify a path.

Deploying Office and Other Products Together

checkbox

If you are including service packs or other updates in the core installation, add OHotFix.exe (the utility that applies updates) to the [ChainedInstalled_2] section. Specify the task type as EXE.

Step by Step: Deploy Office 2003 and Service Pack 1 Together

checkbox

Run Office Setup. Setup copies the installation image to the local installation source on each user's computer and performs the installation from there. Next, OneNote is installed, and then OHotFix runs and applies all the updates in its folder in alphabetical order.
