Word 2003 Update: KB830000

Word 2003 Update: KB830000 corrects an error in which Microsoft Office Word 2003, under certain circumstances, could become unresponsive when a user attempts to save a file or when Word automatically saves an AutoRecover file.

Toolbox   The full-file version of Word 2003 Update: KB830000 consists of ONE Windows Installer patch file (Winword-FullFile-GLB.msp) packaged in a self-extracting executable (Office2003-kb830000-fullfile-enu.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2003 Resource Kit Downloads page.

Note    The full-file version of the Word 2003 update will install successfully on original Office 2003 release installations.

Strategies for updating your Word 2003 installations

Administrative updates provide full-file replacement of all files changed by a service pack or product update. They can be used in one of two ways:

  • To update client computers directly.

Because administrative updates install complete files, rather than patched files, the administrative update can correctly replace any files that have been modified with previous updates. Users can apply them even when they do not have access to an installation source.

  • To update an administrative installation point.

After the administrative image is patched, client computers recache and reinstall Office from there. Users must be able to connect to the administrative image on the network.

The recommended method for distributing the administrative version of the Word 2003 update is to apply it directly to client computers. This approach allows you to maintain an unmodified baseline administrative image and manage the patching process on the client side. In this scenario, client computers do not become unsynchronized with a patched administrative image, and tasks such as install on demand and detect and repair continue to work correctly regardless of which patches users have applied.

For more information about applying administrative patches directly to client computers, see the topic Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates and read the section "Distributing full-file administrative updates".

In an organization with strong, centralized control over software deployment, you may choose to apply the Word 2003 update to the administrative installation point, and then recache and reinstall Word 2003 on users' computers to apply the changes. In this scenario, new client installations always include the most recent updates; however, if there is a delay in updating some clients, they become unsynchronized with the patched administrative image.

For detailed procedures for patching the administrative image and updating client computers, see the topic Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates and read the section "Updating clients from a patched administrative image".

An alternative to the administrative update strategy is to apply the binary (client) version of the Word 2003 update directly to users' computers within your organization. Binary patches are smaller and easier to distribute than full-file administrative updates. Although binary patches require access to the installation source, new functionality in Office 2003 Setup provides users with a local installation source. The client version of the Word 2003 Update: KB830000 is available from the Microsoft Download Center .

For more information about this update method, see the topic Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates and read the section "Caching installation files locally and distributing client updates".

For details on each of these patching strategies and a more complete comparison of the three update methods, see Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates.

If you update your administrative installation point and recache and reinstall Word 2003 on client computers, you run a command line that includes the REINSTALL=[list of features] property. This property specifies whether you want to reinstall specific features or reinstall all applications on the administrative image.

For the Word 2003 update, the value for [list of features] is as follows:

WORDFiles
