Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update: KB832333

Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update: KB832333 enhances the junk e-mail filter in Microsoft® Office Outlook 2003 to help provide a higher level of protection against junk e-mail.

As part of Microsoft's ongoing commitment to reducing junk e-mail, periodic updates will be provided to Outlook users. This update is optional and provides a more up-to-date definition of messages that are considered to be junk or not junk.

Toolbox   The full-file version of Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update: KB832333 consists of one Windows Installer patch file (Outlfltr-FullFile-GLB.msp) packaged in a self-extracting executable (Office2003-kb832333-fullfile-enu.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2003 Resource Kit Downloads page.

Localized versions of this update are listed later in this article in the section titled "Localized versions of the Outlook Junk E-mail Filter update."

Note    The full-file version of the Outlook Junk E-mail Filter update will install successfully on original release installations of Office.

Strategies for updating your Outlook 2003 installations

Administrative updates provide full-file replacement of all files changed by a service pack or product update. They can be used in one of two ways:

  • To update client computers directly.

Because administrative updates install complete files, rather than patched files, the administrative update can correctly replace any files that have been modified with previous updates. Users can apply them even when they do not have access to an installation source.

  • To update an administrative installation point.

After the administrative image is patched, client computers recache and reinstall Office from there. Users must be able to connect to the administrative image on the network.

The recommended method for distributing the administrative version of the Outlook Junk E-mail Filter update is to apply it directly to client computers. This approach allows you to maintain an unmodified baseline administrative image and manage the patching process on the client side. In this scenario, client computers do not become unsynchronized with a patched administrative image, and tasks such as install on demand and detect and repair continue to work correctly regardless of which patches users have applied.

For more information about applying administrative patches directly to client computers, see the topic Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates and read the section "Distributing full-file administrative updates".

In an organization with strong, centralized control over software deployment, you may choose to apply the Outlook Junk E-mail Filter update to the administrative installation point, and then recache and reinstall Outlook 2003 on users' computers to apply the changes. In this scenario, new client installations always include the most recent updates; however, if there is a delay in updating some clients, they become unsynchronized with the patched administrative image.

For detailed procedures for patching the administrative image and updating client computers, see the topic Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates and read the section "Updating clients from a patched administrative image".

An alternative to the administrative update strategy is to apply the binary (client) version of the Outlook Junk E-mail Filter update directly to users' computers within your organization. Binary patches are smaller and easier to distribute than full-file administrative updates. Although binary patches require access to the installation source, new functionality in Office 2003 Setup provides users with a local installation source. The client version of the Outlook 2003 Junk E-mail Filter Update: KB832333 is available from the Microsoft Office Online Web site.

For more information about this update method, see the topic Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates and read the section "Caching installation files locally and distributing client updates".

For details on each of these patching strategies and a more complete comparison of the three update methods, see Distributing Office 2003 Product Updates.
