Microsoft Office InfoPath® 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) enhances the application with critical security-related fixes and other updates as well as new features. In some organizations, however, administrators might prefer to delay deployment of new features but still distribute security fixes and other updates as soon as possible. For InfoPath 2003, administrators can set a single policy — during or after the installation — that accomplishes that goal.
InfoPath 2003 SP1 is included with Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (Office2003SP1-kb842532- fullfile-enu.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2003 Resource Kit Downloads page.
The new features in InfoPath 2003 SP1 include useful filters, rules, and controls that you can add to your forms; however, when you create a form using the new features, only other users who have also installed SP1 can complete the form. If you are deploying SP1 gradually throughout your organization, then the new features may not benefit everyone right away.
By contrast, InfoPath SP1 also contains critical updates and security fixes that all users need, as well as performance enhancements.
After installing SP1, users can retain the fixes and performance enhancements but turn off the new features by clicking Options on the Tools menu and then selecting the appropriate check box on the Advanced tab. The setting is implemented the next time InfoPath starts.
To ensure that all users have the new SP1 features disabled, you can set and enforce this option by setting the Disable new Service Pack features policy. This policy, which is available in the revised InfoPath 2003 ADM file (Inf11.adm), corresponds to the following Windows registry subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\InfoPath\VersionMode
Toolbox The new InfoPath 2003 SP1 ADM file is available in a self-extracting executable download (Office-2003-SP1-ADMs-OPAs-and-Explain-Text.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2003 Resource Kit Downloads page.
If you want to set this policy, Microsoft recommends you do so when you deploy InfoPath 2003 SP1. If users create forms with the new features and the features are subsequently disabled, then they will not be able to open those forms.
Note that you must have Active Directory® and Group Policy set up in your organization to set policy. For more information, see Managing Users' Configurations by Policy.
Note InfoPath 2003 SP1 supports a new registry key that administrators can use to point the application to a custom Answer Wizard file. In the Windows registry, locate the subkey HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\InfoPath. Add a new subkey named Answer Wizard SP, create a value entry named AdminDatabase, and set its value to the path to your custom file. If your users are still working with the InfoPath RTM user interface, use the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\InfoPath\Answer Wizard subkey instead.
