With the release of Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1a, updated versions of the applications and utilities on Disc 2 are now available, in addition to the core products on Disc 1. Software on Disc 2 includes Microsoft Small Business Tools, Microsoft Publisher for Windows®, and a collection of Office support tools, text converters, and graphics filters. Office 2000 Disc 2 is included with Office Professional and Office Premium.
If you are deploying Disc 2 for the first time, you must create a separate administrative installation point for it. If you already have an administrative installation point for Disc 2, you can use the update file (Data2.msp) to patch your existing network share.
Toolbox The Office Resource Kit includes the Office 2000 SR-1 Disc 2 update, contained in a self-extracting file named O2ksr1adl.exe. You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2000 Resource Kit Downloads page.
This article describes how to update an existing administrative installation point for Office 2000 SR-1a Disc 2. General information about the SR-1 update is available in the article Deploying Office 2000 Service Release 1 in the Office Resource Kit Journal.
Installing the update for Disc 2
You can use the following procedures to update an administrative installation point for Office 2000 SR-1 Disc 2.
To update an administrative installation point for Disc 2
- Make sure the Office 2000 SR-1a patch (released in May 2000) was applied to the administrative installation point for Disc 1.
- Copy the following folders from the Disc 1 administrative installation point to the Disc 2 share:
The folders from the Disc 1 share replace the corresponding versions on Disc 2.
- If you customized the original Setup.ini or Offcln9.opc files for Disc 2, make sure the modified versions of these files carry the original names.
For example, if you renamed Setup.ini to MySetup.ini, create a copy of the modified file with the original name before you update the Disc 2 installation point. The Disc 2 update does not modify Setup.ini or Offcln9.opc, but it does require the files to be on the computer.
- Run the Data2.msp patch file on your Disc 2 administrative installation point using a command line similar to the following:
msiexec /a <path to admin image>\data2.msi /p <path>\Data2.msp Shortfilenames=1
Where <path to admin image> is the full path to your Disc 2 administrative installation point, and <path> is the path to Data2.msp.
After completing these steps, the installation point for Disc 2 is correctly updated.
Correcting installation errors with Disc 2
If you installed the Disc 2 update on a separate administrative installation point using the procedures for Disc 1, chances are you received a string of error messages during the upgrade. A typical message reads:
Error 1308: Source file not found <path>\IE5\EN\IENT_S5.CAB.
Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.
You see a separate error message for each nonupgraded file that Windows Installer attempts to access – typically about 15 files in an installation. These error messages are caused by the differences between the Disc 1 and Disc 2 file replacement schemes. (Disc 1 provides full-file replacement, but Disc 2 replaces only upgraded files.) Consequently, Disc 2 is unable to update Internet Explorer and Windows Installer files on the administrative installation point.
Although it is safe to click the Ignore button to dismiss the error messages, you must replace the directories to complete the installation.
To update the directories on a Disc 2 administrative installation point
- Make sure the Office 2000 SR-1a patch (Released in May 2000) was applied to the administrative installation point for Disc 1.
- Copy the following folders from the Disc 1 administrative installation point to the Disc 2 share:
The folders from the Disc 1 share replace the corresponding versions on Disc 2.
These steps correct the installation – you do not need to rerun the SR-1 update for Disc 2.
For more information on the error condition, see the article You receive an "Error 1308. Source file not found <path>\IE5\EN\ICWCON.CAB" error message when you install the Office 2000 SR-1 Update in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
