Sort Shortcuts on the Places Bar

April 16, 1999

When you add custom shortcuts to the Places Bar in Microsoft Office 2000 applications, you can determine the order in which the buttons appear. By modifying settings in the Windows® registry, you can arrange the shortcuts so that the most useful places for opening and saving documents always come first.

Sort Shortcuts in Ascending Order

The SortAscending value entry is a DWORD value that specifies whether to sort the list of shortcuts and display them in ascending order on the Places Bar.

To sort Places Bar shortcuts in ascending order

  1. In the Windows registry, locate the following subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Open Find\Places\UserDefinedPlaces

  2. Select the subkey for one of your custom Places Bar shortcuts (Placex).
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and click DWORD Value.
  4. Type SortAscending as the name of the new DWORD value.
  5. Double-click the SortAscending value, type 1 in the Value data box, and click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for the other custom Places Bar shortcuts and assign each one a different value in the Value data box.

Sort Shortcuts in Index Order

The Index value entry is a DWORD value that specifies the order in which to display the shortcuts on the Places Bar. Add the Index entry and rank your custom shortcuts numerically to specify the order in which you want them to appear.

Note   The Index entry takes precedence over the SortAscending entry. If you set the Index entry, the SortAscending entry is ignored.
