Use the Correct Version of Setup for Office 2000 SR-1

April 20, 2000

When you apply the Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) administrator update to your Office 2000 administrative installation point, Data1.msp automatically installs an enhanced version of the Office Setup program (Setup.exe version 9.0.3821) for any Office 2000 Disc 1 product. To get the latest version of Setup.exe, however, the original Office 2000 Setup program (Setup.exe version 9.0.2611) must be present in the folder.

Many organizations have already updated to an interim version of the Office 2000 Setup program (Setup.exe version 9.0.2720) to get the /chained command-line option and other enhancements. If you installed this interim version from the Office Resource Kit, Data1.msp does not correctly update Setup.exe on the administrative installation point, and you receive the following error message:

Error 1328. Error applying patch to file <admin image path>\SETUP.EXE.
It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be
modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.

The administrator update finishes patching the rest of your administrative installation point. However, Setup.exe is not replaced with the new version, and users cannot successfully update existing installations of Office 2000 to SR-1.

Note   Setup.exe version 9.0.2720 may also have been used to update other Office 2000 products on an administrative installation point (for example, Office 2000 Disc 2 or Microsoft Access runtime master). The Office 2000 SR-1 standard update fails to update Setup.exe for these Office products as well.

If you have not yet applied the administrator update to your original Office 2000 administrative installation point, you can avoid this error by replacing Setup.exe version 9.0.2720 with the original version from the Office 2000 CD-ROM (Setup.exe version 9.0.2611). When you apply the administrator update, Setup.exe is correctly updated to the latest version.

If you have already applied the administrator update and Setup.exe was not updated correctly, you must replace Setup.exe version 9.0.2720 with the original Office 2000 Setup program and then rerun the administrator update.

Alternatively, you can copy the Office 2000 SR-1 Setup program (Setup.exe version 9.0.3821) directly to the updated administrative installation point. Clients can then connect to the administrative installation point and upgrade successfully to Office 2000 SR-1.

The Office 2000 SR-1 Setup program contains all of the updates previously available only in the interim version (Setup.exe version 9.0.2720). In addition, the Office 2000 SR-1 Setup program contains new functionality necessary to correctly update existing client installations of Office 2000. The Office 2000 SR-1 CD-ROM (the full package product) contains Setup.exe version 9.0.3821.

Toolbox   The Office Resource Kit (orktools.exe) also includes Setup.exe version 9.0.3821. You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2000 Resource Kit Downloads page.
