Prevent Install-on-demand Prompts for Remote Outlook Users

July 16, 1999

You can choose to install a subset of Microsoft Outlook® 2000 features for some users. For example, you might have a large number of roaming users who have limited disk space on portable computers or a slow connection to the network. In this scenario, you can carefully configure the installation to provide only needed features and to prevent install-on-demand prompts.

Careful configuration is necessary because application components are not listed separately on the feature tree in the Custom Installation Wizard. Required components are typically installed behind the scenes with the selected features.

However, when you set the installation state for some Outlook features to Run from My Computer, the Custom Installation Wizard does not automatically include all the required components. As a result, remote users might be prompted unexpectedly to connect to the network and download new features.

One way to avoid install-on-demand prompts is to set the entire Outlook feature to Run from My Computer, and then to set any child features you want to exclude from the installation to Not Available.

To prevent install-on-demand prompts for Outlook features

  1. Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
  2. On the Set Feature Installation States panel, click the down arrow next to Microsoft Outlook for Windows and click Run from My Computer.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) next to Microsoft Outlook for Windows to fully expand the feature tree.
  4. To prevent installation of a feature, click down arrow next to the feature and click Not Available.
  5. To hide unavailable features from users during Setup, right-click each child feature that you set to Not Available and click Hide.
