Tips for Configuring Your Outlook Installation

July 16, 1999

When you deploy Microsoft Outlook® 2000 in your organization, keep in mind the following configuration issues.

Setting the default Outlook configuration

You have the following choices for users' default Outlook configuration:

  • Corporate/Workgroup, which supports a variety of electronic mail (e-mail) servers.
  • Internet Only, which is optimized for Internet use.

Unless your only e-mail server is POP3 or IMAP, Corporate/Workgroup is the recommended configuration.

You can modify Outlook profile and account information for all users at once by setting options in the Custom Installation Wizard and saving them in an MST file. On the Customize Outlook Installation Options panel, click Customize Outlook profile and account information, and then select Corporate or Workgroup Settings or Internet Only Settings. This step sets the default configuration, and the wizard displays a list of settings for that configuration.

Alternatively, you can set the default Outlook configuration on the Modify Setup Properties panel of the Custom Installation Wizard. Double-click the OutlookConfiguration property, and then click Corporate or Workgroup or Internet Only.

Note   If you modify a Setup property on the Modify Setup Properties panel of the Custom Installation Wizard, this setting overrides any corresponding options that you set on previous panels of the wizard. Your modified Setup property is written to the MST file.

For more information about setting Outlook configuration options, see How to Customize Outlook 2000 Installation in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

Saving Outlook settings by using the Profile Wizard

The Profile Wizard helps you to create and distribute a default user profile, including standard locations for files and templates, in an OPS file. When you deploy a standard user profile, all of your users start with the same Office configuration.

However, the Profile Wizard does not capture the following Outlook settings:

  • Outlook profile settings
  • Outlook Bar shortcuts
  • Outlook storage file locations (PST, OST, and PAB files)

For more information about saving and distributing user-defined options in an OPS file, see Profile Wizard in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

Retaining a previous version of Outlook

If you choose to delay your installation of Outlook 2000 when you deploy Office 2000, you must carefully customize the Office 2000 transform (MST file) so that you do not inadvertently delete users’ installations of Outlook 97 or Outlook 98.

On the Remove Previous Versions panel in the Custom Installation Wizard, clear the Microsoft Outlook 97 & 98 check box. This step ensures that these earlier versions of Outlook are not removed when you install the rest of Office 2000.

For more information about installing Outlook 2000 after Office 2000, see Staging Your Deployment of Office Premium in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

Setting an encryption level when you install Outlook

You can install Outlook with either 40-bit or 128-bit encryption. When you install Office 2000, Setup automatically configures Outlook with the same encryption level as Internet Explorer on the user's computer.

For more information about encryption levels in Office 2000, see Installation Requirements for Encryption Components in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.
