Updated Deployment Tools Now Available

March 21, 2000

The Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit includes a set of installation tools that make customizing, configuring, and deploying Office 2000 in your organization more efficient. Updated versions of several of these tools are now available on the Microsoft Web site.

Office Resource Kit core tool set

The following Office Resource Kit tools have been updated for Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR-1) and Microsoft Windows® 2000:

  • Custom Installation Wizard (version 1.00.00.3728)
  • Profile Wizard INI file
  • New policy template file for Windows Installer 1.1

Toolbox   The Office Resource Kit includes the updated Office Resource Kit tools (ORKTools.exe). You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2000 Resource Kit Downloads page.

Custom Installation Wizard updated for Windows 2000

The Office Custom Installation Wizard allows you to customize the way that all users in your organization install Office on their computers. You use the wizard to create a transform (MST file) that modifies the Office 2000 package (MSI file). If you also use the Profile Wizard to capture user settings, you can include the OPS file in your transform.

Windows 2000 offers additional management tools for installing Office. When you assign or publish Office under Windows 2000, you can include a transform. If you assign Office to computers, however, an OPS file in the transform can cause the installation to fail.

The Custom Installation Wizard has been updated to allow an OPS file in a transform in any Windows 2000–based deployment scenario. The updated Custom Installation Wizard (Custwiz.exe version 1.00.00.3728) is included in the latest version of the Office Resource Kit core tool set.

This version of the Custom Installation Wizard also offers a new Setup option for administrators. On the Add Installations and Run Programs page, you can specify a command line to run after Office Setup completes. The default setting runs these commands once on each computer.

Administrators can now optionally set a property to run the command lines once for each user who logs on to the computer. To specify this behavior, set the new property OCW_ADDED_PROGRAMS_PER_USER to 1. You can set this property in the wizard on the Optional Properties dialog box, in the Setup.ini file, or on the command line.

For more information about specifying Setup properties, see Customizing How Setup Runs in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

For more information about using the Custom Installation Wizard to create Office 2000 transforms, see Office Custom Installation Wizard in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

Profile Wizard updated for Office 2000 SR-1

You use the Profile Wizard to save and deploy a standard user profile when you deploy Office 2000 so that all users start with the same settings. The updated version of ORKTools.exe includes a revised Proflwiz.ini file that excludes more settings than the previous version. These exclusions ensure that settings are applied properly on users’ computers when you deploy Office 2000 with an OPS file.

For example, the updated wizard excludes path information specific to a given user - paths that are not valid when deployed throughout an organization. The updated INI file also allows the Profile Wizard to properly migrate Office 97 settings on users’ computers when the transform includes an OPS file and also specifies to migrate user settings.

For more information about using the Profile Wizard to store and retrieve Office 2000 settings, see Profile Wizard in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

For more information about using the Custom Installation Wizard to deploy an OPS file, see How to Preset User Options in an OPS File in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

New policy template file for Windows Installer 1.1

Windows Installer has been updated in Windows 2000 and Office 2000 SR-1. If you are deploying Office with Windows Installer 1.1, a number of new settings and system policies are available. To help you take advantage of them, the Office Resource Kit includes a new policy template file for Windows Installer 1.1 - Instlr11.adm.

Instlr11.adm is included in the updated version of the Office Resource core tool set. The new policy template also comes with Windows 2000.

Note   If you are installing the original version of Office 2000, which uses Windows Installer 1.0, use the original Instlr1.adm policy template to set system policies.

The Office Resource Kit includes policy templates for all configurable options in Office 2000 applications. You use the policy templates with the System Policy Editor to specify default settings or to prevent users from changing settings. For more information about working with Office 2000 system policies, see Managing Users' Options with System Policies in the Office 2000 Resource Kit.

Updated Internet Explorer Administration Kit

The Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) allows administrators to customize, distribute, and maintain Internet Explorer 5 from a central location. A new version of the kit is now available for Internet Explorer version 5.01 – the version of Internet Explorer that is installed with Office 2000 SR-1.

The updated version of the IEAK for Internet Explorer 5.01 includes a fix that allows you to make corporate branding changes - default colors, title bar text, and so on. These customizations are applied when you install Internet Explorer 5.01 with Office.

The previous version of IEAK 5.01 ignored these branding customizations when the kit was started from the Custom Installation Wizard. Similar customizations made while running the IEAK 5.01 in standalone mode were applied as expected. You can use the new IEAK 5.01 either way: through the Custom Installation Wizard or in standalone mode.

The Office Resource Kit does not include the latest version of the IEAK. However, you can download the kit from the Internet Explorer Web site in one of two ways:

  • Start the Custom Installation Wizard and verify or update your IEAK version automatically from the Internet Explorer Web site (requires an Internet connection).
  • Download the latest standalone version of the IEAK from the Internet Explorer Administration Kit Web site.

Note   This version of the IEAK 5.01 (version 5.0.2809.2500) replaces the original IEAK 5.01 (version 5.0.2809.2400) that was distributed on the Internet Explorer Web site prior to the release of Office 2000 SR-1.

To update the IEAK from the Custom Installation Wizard

  1. Start the Custom Installation Wizard, go to the Customize IE 5 Installation Options page, and click Customize.
  2. In the IEAK, go to the Automatic Version Synchronization page.

If you do not have the latest IEAK, the wizard prompts you to download the new version (requires an Internet connection to detect the version).

  3. Click Yes to update.

The wizard downloads the latest version from the Web site and restarts automatically.

For more information about deploying Office 2000 SR-1 with a customized Internet Explorer 5.01 package, see Deploying Office 2000 Service Release 1 in the Office Resource Kit Journal.
