Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack and Proofing Tools
To take full advantage of the international features that support Microsoft Office 2000, you can deploy one of the following sets of additional language resources:
- Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools
- Microsoft Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack
You can deploy Proofing Tools or MultiLanguage Pack files on their own after you install Office. By developing an integrated deployment plan, however, you can also deploy either or both of these products to users at the same time that you deploy Office 2000.
Office 2000 Proofing Tools
This collection of tools includes spelling and grammar checkers, thesauruses, and AutoCorrect lists that help users create and edit Office documents in more than 30 languages. All of these language resources are included on a single CD-ROM, but you can install proofing tools for only the languages that users need.
Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack
Plug-in language features allow Office 2000 users to switch the language of the user interface and Help system. MultiLanguage Pack includes resources for more than 25 languages on 6 CD-ROMS, each of which has its own Setup program. When you install selected MultiLanguage Packs features, the proofing tools for those languages are also included.
Note Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack is not a retail product, and it is not licensed separately. For more information about Office 2000 and the MultiLanguage Pack, see the Office 2000 MultiLanguage Packs FAQ page on the Microsoft Office Web site.

Deploy Language Resources Separately
Both Office 2000 Proofing Tools and Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack use a Microsoft Windows® Installer-based Setup program. This technology allows users to install language resources on a single computer directly from the CD-ROM or to install over the network from an administrative installation point.
If you create an administrative installation point for MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools, you can simplify and control the deployment process. For example, you can customize and standardize installation of language resources for all the users in your organization. You use the Custom Installation Wizard to create a transform (MST file) that includes settings for the language features you want users to install.
In this scenario, you can even omit a language feature from the installation by setting the feature to Not Available and Hide on the Set Feature Installation States panel of the wizard. Users cannot change the installation state of a hidden feature during Setup, nor can they add or remove the feature later by using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. (To hide a feature, right-click the feature, and then click Hide.)
Toolbox The Office Resource Kit (orktools.exe) includes the Custom Installation Wizard. You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2000 Resource Kit Downloads page.
Deploying Office 2000 Proofing Tools
Office 2000 Proofing Tools provides editing tools for more than 30 languages. You can install proofing tools for one or more languages on users’ computers. Each language set that you install allows a user to create and edit documents in that language by using proofing tools such as spelling or grammar checkers and the AutoCorrect list.
Disk space requirements for proofing tools vary by language. Proofing tools for most languages require about 20 megabytes (MB) of hard disk space in addition to what Office requires. However, Asian languages require as much as 240 MB of hard disk space in addition to what Office requires – including the necessary fonts and Input Method Editors (IMEs).
To install proofing tools on a single computer
- On the Proofing Tools CD-ROM, run Setup.exe.
- On the Select Features panel, select the languages you want to install and set the appropriate installation states.
- Click Install Now.
You can also customize the installation of proofing tools for all the users in your organization. In this scenario, you create an administrative installation point on a server by running Setup.exe with the /a command-line option. Then you create a transform that defines the Proofing Tools installation. Users install the proofing tools over the network by using the custom transform.
To create a transform for installing proofing tools
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
- When prompted for an MSI file, enter the Proofkit.msi file from the administrative installation point.
- On the Set Feature Installation States panel, select the languages you want to install and set the appropriate installation states.
When users run Setup from the administration installation point, they use the Transforms= command-line option to specify this transform. For example, users might use the following command line:
\\server1\Proof\setup.exe /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\Proof\Proof.mst
Tip To install only a few languages, set the installation state of the entire Microsoft Office 2000 Proofing Tools feature in the transform to Not Available. Then expand the feature tree, select the languages you want, and set them to another installation state.
Deploying Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack
Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack provides user interfaces and Help files for more than 25 languages. MultiLanguage Pack also includes the complete Office 2000 Proofing Tools.
MultiLanguage Pack consists of sets of languages on six CD-ROMs. If you want to use languages from different MultiLanguage Pack CD-ROMs, you must run Setup separately for each CD-ROM. If you want users to install MultiLanguage Pack over the network, you must create a separate administrative installation point for each CD-ROM.
To install MultiLanguage Pack on a single computer
- On the MultiLanguage Pack CD-ROM that contains the languages you want to install, run Setup.exe.
- On the Select Features panel, select the languages you want to install and set the appropriate installation states.
- Click Install Now.
You can also create a customized version of MultiLanguage Pack for users to install over the network by creating an administrative installation point and a transform (MST file).

Deploy Language Resources with Office
If you deploy language resources from either Office 2000 MultiLanguage Pack or Office 2000 Proofing Tools at the same time that you deploy Office 2000, you can chain the installations together so that they are installed on a user’s computer during the same operation.
To do this, you create a transform for Office Setup that includes the Setup program for MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools. You can also create an additional transform that customizes the MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools installation and deploy customized versions of all these products at the same time.
Toolbox To successfully use this method, you must use the enhanced version of Setup.exe (version 9.0.3821)), which supports the /chained command-line option. This version is available as a downloadable compressed file Setupsr1.exe.You can find this downloadable file on the Office 2000 Resource Kit Downloads page.
To include Setup for language resources in an Office transform
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
- When prompted for the MSI file, enter the Data1.msi file from the Office administrative installation point.
- On the Add Installations and Run Programs panel, add the Setup command line for the MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools Setup.
You must include the /chained command-line option. For example:
\\server1\MLP1\setup.exe /chained /q
- If you created a transform for MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools, add the TRANSFORMS= command-line option to include that transform. For example:
\\server1\MLP1\setup.exe /chained /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\MLP1\MLP1.mst
Now users can install Office and MultiLanguage Pack together by running Office Setup with the appropriate transform. For example, users might use the following command line:
\\server1\Office\setup.exe /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\Office\Office.mst
In this case, Office Setup runs MultiLanguage Pack after the Office installation is complete. The sequence is exactly the same when you add the Proofing Tools Setup program to an Office 2000 transform.
Deploy language resources for different groups of users
In many organizations, you must install different language resources for different groups of users. In this case, you create a separate MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools transform for each group, and also a separate Office transform for each MultiLanguage Pack or Proofing Tools transform.
For example, you might have one group of users that speaks French but needs to edit documents in German. You might have a second group of users that speaks Russian but needs to edit in Hungarian. In this scenario, you create two transforms for each group of users.
First, you create separate administrative installation points on the server for each of the following programs:
- Core Office (English)
- MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 (French and German)
- MultiLanguage Pack Disc 6 (Russian and Hungarian).
Then you create transforms for each group of users. For your French-speaking users, create the following transforms:
- MlpFrench.mst Runs with MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 Setup and installs only French language features and German proofing tools.
- OfficeFrench.mst Runs with Office 2000 Setup and calls MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 Setup (with MlpFrench.mst).
To create a MultiLanguage Pack transform for French
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
- On the Open MSI File panel, enter the Langpack.msi file from the administrative installation point for MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1:
\\server1\MLP1\Langpack.msi
- On the Select the MST File to Save panel, enter the name of the MST file you are creating; for example:
\\server1\MLP1\MlpFrench.mst
- On the Select Features panel, select Microsoft Office (French), and set the installation state to Run from My Computer.
- Under Microsoft Office (German), expand Office Tools and select Proofing Tools (German), and set the installation state to Run from My Computer.
- Set all other features to Not Available.
After you have customized your MultiLanguage Pack installation, you create an Office 2000 transform to install both Office and MultiLanguage Pack.
To create an Office transform that includes French
- Start the Custom Installation Wizard.
- On the Open MSI File panel, enter the Data1.msi file from the Office administrative installation point:
\\server1\Office\Data1.msi
- On the Select the MST File to Save panel, enter the name of the MST file you are creating; for example:
\\server1\Office\OfficeFrench.mst
- On the Add Installations and Run Programs panel, add the Setup command line for MultiLanguage Pack; for example:
\\server1\MLP1\setup.exe /chained /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\MLP1\MlpFrench.mst
The French-speaking group installs Office by using the following command line:
\\server1\Office\setup.exe /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\Office\OfficeFrench.mst
They end up with a French user interface and Help system with both French and German editing tools enabled.
The basic procedures for deploying to Russian-speaking users are identical. You create the following transforms:
- MlpRussian.mst Runs with MultiLanguage Pack Disc 6 Setup and installs only Russian language features and Hungarian proofing tools.
- OfficeRussian.mst Runs with Office 2000 Setup and calls MultiLanguage Pack Disc 6 Setup (with MlpRussian.mst).
The Russian-speaking group installs Office by using the following command line:
\\server1\Office\setup.exe /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\Office\OfficeRussian.mst
This group ends up with a Russian user interface and Help system with both Russian and Hungarian editing tools enabled.
Deploy multiple MultiLanguage Packs with Office
What if you need to deploy features from two languages with Office, but those languages are included on different MultiLanguage Pack CD-ROMs? Each MultiLanguage Pack CD-ROM has its own Setup program, and you must create a separate transform for each disc. But you can include only one MultiLanguage Pack Setup command line in an Office transform.
In this case, you can include two or more MultiLanguage Pack installations with your Office 2000 installation by chaining the MultiLanguage Pack Setup programs together in a series of transforms.
For example, suppose you want to install French and Spanish language features on the user’s computer at the same time that you deploy Office. French language features are installed from MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1, and Spanish language features from MultiLanguage Pack Disc 3.
The sequence of tasks in this situation is as follows:
- Create administrative installation points for the core Office product (English), MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 (French), and MultiLanguage Pack Disc 3 (Spanish).
- Using the procedures described earlier on this page, create a transform for MultiLanguage Pack Disc 3 Setup to install only Spanish language features (MlpSpanish.mst).
- Create a transform for MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 Setup to install only French language features (MlpFrench.mst). Add a command line to run MultiLanguage Pack Disc 3 Setup with your Spanish transform.
- Create a transform for Office 2000 Setup (OfficeFrSp.mst). Add a command line to run MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 Setup with your French transform.
Users can now install Office by specifying the Office transform in the Setup command-line:
\\server1\Office\setup.exe /q TRANSFORMS=\\server1\Office\OfficeFrSp.mst
From a user’s perspective, deployment proceeds in the following uninterrupted sequence:
- Office Setup installs Office, as specified in the OfficeFrSp.mst transform.
- When Office installation is complete, Office Setup runs MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 Setup, as specified in the MlpFrench.mst transform.
- When MultiLanguage Pack Disc 1 installation is complete, Disc 1 Setup runs MultiLanguage Pack Disc 3 Setup, as specified in the MlpSpanish.mst transform.
At the end of the process, the user has English Office installed with French and Spanish language features enabled. By running the Microsoft Office Language Settings utility from the Start menu, users can switch the user interface and Help language of Office to English, French, or Spanish.
