Tips for customizing OneNote stationery

Applies to
Microsoft Office OneNoteĀ® 2003 Service Pack 1

OneNote comes with many different styles of pre-made stationery, which you can modify to fit your needs. Some of the ways you can customize this stationery include deleting unnecessary images or text, adding new images or text, rearranging the contents on the page, or adding rule lines. For example, you could add your company logo to customize the stationery you use at work, or personalize your pages by adding designs and photos. You can also add bullets and note flags to existing stationery, which can add structure to your thoughts and provide a way to sort your notes. Having these elements built into your stationery will help you save time when taking notes.

Customizing stationery in OneNote will add to your note-taking experience. With stationery geared toward your own note-taking habits, not only will you be even more organized, you'll be able to take notes more efficiently. In addition, customizing your own stationery will add another layer to the freedom and fun you'll experience with OneNote. The following suggestions provide ideas for customizing stationery to aid in your specific note-taking tasks.

ShowTips

  • After customizing existing stationery, click Save current page as stationery in the Stationery task pane, and then give the modified stationery a new name. Once you save this new stationery, it will appear in the My Stationery section in the Stationery task pane.
  • You can set a piece of stationery as the default stationery for a particular section in your notebook. To do this, under Choose default stationery in the Stationery task pane, click the stationery that you want to apply to all new pages in the current section.

Personalizing stationery with art or photos

Whether you're customizing stationery for work or personal use, you can enhance the look of your pages by adding pictures and images. Try adding photos of your family or pets to stationery you use for making To Do lists, shopping lists, or for all-purpose note-taking. For example, in the illustration below, one user has added a picture of the family dog to the Simple To Do List stationery, as well as headings and subheadings.

You may also want to create your own digital designs and include them on your pages. For example, you could create a design in Microsoft Paint or another design program, and then drag it onto the page in OneNote, or insert a picture from a file on your computer.

To expand the reach of your business image, create corporate stationery for your company. Customize the stationery by adding your company's logo, Web address, phone and fax numbers, and address. You can encourage others in your company to use the stationery by saving the corporate stationery as a .one file on a shared network location, or by sending the file in an e-mail message to employees.

Position photos, designs, and logos on the page so that they don't distract or interfere with your notes.

Using note flags to enhance your organization

You can also add note flags or change the style of note flags for entering list items. For example, in the personalized Simple To Do List stationery shown above, list items are marked by the To Do note flag. Using note flags makes it easy to add action items to a list and then check them off as you complete them, and regardless of their location, you can use the Note Flags Summary feature to consolidate all of your outstanding To Do items in one convenient location.

Adding bullets to speed up note-taking

Some of the existing OneNote stationery uses bullets to denote important information, such as dates, topics, and agenda items. Including bullets in your stationery saves valuable time when you're actually taking notes. There's no need to create a bulleted list on the spot, because one is already started for you. All you have to do is type in the information. In the Recurring Meeting stationery shown below, bullets are included to indicate where to add the meeting details, and bulleted lists are provided to track who attended the meeting.

Bullets used in the Recurring Meeting stationery

If you like one of the existing pieces of stationery but it doesn't include bullets, try adding them so that you can make lists pertinent to the type of stationery you're creating. For example, if you like one of the pieces of decorative stationery, you can add bullets to list people, places, items, or other details you want to keep track of in your notes.
