Work with your own Web design tools

Microsoft Office Live provides all the Web tools you need to design your Web site. However, if you already have a Web site or want to design one using your own Web design program, you can. Just activate your own design program, and begin working on your site.

In this article

There are several important things to know before you activate your site using your own design program.

After you have activated this option, you will not be able to use the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer at all, and any pages that you have created using the Web Designer are permanently deleted.

However, any images or documents that you have uploaded to the Image Gallery or the Document Gallery will be saved and available. Images are saved to an Image folder; documents are saved to a Document folder.

If you choose to reactive the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer, any pa ges that you created using your third-party design software will be deleted, as will any files associated with the site including images and documents, and you will have to recreate all of your Web pages using the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer. However, you can use the Web site image and document files, still available on your computer to create and edit your site.

Activate your own Web design tools

  1. On the left navigation bar, click WebSite. In Page Manager, click Site Actions, and then click Activate third-party design tools.
  2. On the next screen, click Activate now.
  3. Select the check box and then click OK.

You have now disabled the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer.

  4. In WebSite, click Go to your Web site folder. A folder containing your new Web pages opens.

Files that were previously uploaded to your Document and Image Galleries are available in the Documents and Images folders.

  5. On your computer, open the folder where your finished Web pages are stored.
  6. Drag the HTML files from your directory and drop them into the Microsoft Office Live Web site file. Be sure to include all of the files, such as images and documents, that are necessary to view your Web site.

Important   Your Home page file name must be "default.htm." If it is not, your public site will show as an error page.

Once you have activated using your own Web designer, you no longer have access to Page Manager. Instead, your Web pages are stored in a folder on the Microsoft Office Live servers.

When first opening your Web site folder, you will find up to three folders and one file. The Shared folder contains all the files necessary to make your pages play nicely with Microsoft Office Live. Do not delete this folder. If you have already uploaded documents and images to Microsoft Office Live, you will find those in either the Documents or Images folder. The default.aspx file is your temporary home page. This file can be deleted once your new default.htm Web page is in the folder.

Important   Do not delete the Shared folder from the Microsoft Office Live Web site folder. The folder contains hidden files that are used by the system to direct visitors to your public Web site. If you delete this folder, your service will be interrupted and you will need to contact Microsoft Office Live Customer Support to fix the problem.

Edit HTML Web pages

  1. Open the Web pages you have saved in your Web site folder on your computer with your third-party design program or HTML editor. Make your changes and save them.
  2. In WebSite, open the Microsoft Office Live Web site folder.
  3. Drag the HTML files from the Web site folder on your computer and drop them into the Microsoft Office Live Web site file. Be sure to include all of the Web site files, such as images and documents, that are necessary to view your Web site.

Add site tracking code to your Web pages

Site tracking code must be inserted into the HTML code on each of your Web pages in order for the Microsoft Office Live Site Reports feature to work.

  1. On the left navigation bar, click WebSite, and then click Site Reports.
  2. On the Web site statistics summary page, click Get code in the left navigation menu.
  3. Follow the instructions and save your changes.
  4. Open your .htm files in an HTML editor and paste the tracking code into each page just before the </body> tag.
  5. Save the changes and upload the files to your Microsoft Office Live Web site folder.

Note   It may take up to a day, after adding the tracking code to your sites, before the traffic data is displayed.

Upload HTML files to your Microsoft Office Live Web site folder

  1. On your computer, open the folder that contains your Web page files.
  2. On the left navigation bar, click WebSite, and then click Go to your Web site folder.
  3. Drag the HTML files from the Web site folder on your computer and drop them into the Microsoft Office Live Web site file. Be sure to include all of the Web site files, such as images and documents, that are necessary to view your Web site.

Once your Web pages are in the Microsoft Office Live Web folder, they are immediately available for your site visitors to view. You can view you Web pages two ways.

View your Web pages

  1. On the left navigation bar, click WebSite, and then click View in the top navigation bar.

Go back to using the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer

You may want to go back to using the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer at some point, and it is possible to do so. Before you do that, however, there are several important things to know.

  • All of the Web pages you have created using third-party software will be deleted from your Web site, as will any files associated with the site including images and documents.
  • You will need to recreate all of your Web pages using the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer templates.
  • You will no longer have access to your Web site folder. It is strongly recommended that you copy the folder to your computer's hard drive before you reactivate the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer.
  • You will need to add all of the documents used in your Web pages to your Document Gallery.
  • You will need to add all images used in your Web pages to your Image Gallery.

Reactivate the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer

  1. On the left navigation bar, click WebSite, click Site Actions, and then click Activate Microsoft Office Live Web Designer.
  2. On the next screen click Activate now.
  3. Select the check box and then click OK.

You have now reactivated the Microsoft Office Live Web Designer. Page Manager is populated with four page templates; however, all of your images and documents have been deleted.

There are a few guidelines to ensure the best Web site experience for your public site visitors.

  • Your home page must include the default.htm extension. For example, www.northwindtraders.com/default.htm would be the address for the Northwind Traders home page. Your site visitors do not need to enter the /default.htm to view your site, it is added automatically.
  • When designing your site, always make sure that your HTML code validates. Your Web design software should check this for you.
  • When updating your site, make your changes to the Web page files on your computer, and then upload them to your Microsoft Office Live Web site folder.
