To use your custom domain for your SharePoint Online Public Website, and also use the domain for Exchange Online and Lync Online, follow these steps. For example, if your domain name is fourthcoffee.com, this setup will let you use firstname.lastname@example.org email addresses on Office 365 and have a www.fourthcoffee.com SharePoint Online Public Website.
- Set up your domain with Exchange Online, Lync Online, or both
- Get your public website ready
- Associate your domain name with your public website
- Create a DNS record to point your domain’s URL to your public website
Important These steps rename your website’s URL to be, for example, www.fourthcoffee.com. If you want people to be able to get to your website by using just fourthcoffee.com, see the Other things to consider section below.
These steps do not change the name of your team site because you can't rename a team site in Office 365. Your team site name stays yourcompany.sharepoint.com.
Step 1: Set up your domain with Exchange Online, Lync Online, or both
Before you set up your domain to work with your SharePoint Online public website, set up the domain in Office 365 with Exchange Online, Lync Online, or both services.
- Add your domain to Office 365. Use the Add a domain wizard in Office 365 to add and verify your domain name. When you’re prompted to choose the domain purpose (that is, the services you want to use with the domain), select Exchange Online, Lync Online, or both. Don’t choose SharePoint Online at this point. You’ll come back and add it later.
- Create DNS records for the services. On your DNS hosting provider’s website, follow these step-by-step instructions to add the DNS records for your Office 365 services. The Add a domain wizard shows you the DNS records that you have to create for your domain to work with the Office 365 services that you selected.
After your changes have updated across the DNS system, you’ll be able to use the Office 365 services you chose. This typically takes about 15 minutes, but can take up to 72 hours. Then, if you’ve set up Exchange Online, for example, you can use your domain with Office 365 email addresses. You don’t, however, need to wait for the updating to finish before you complete the next step, setting up your SharePoint Online public website.
Step 2: Get your public website ready
Before you start Step 3, be sure to customize your public website so the site looks the way you want. Then, after you complete Step 3 and Step 4, your SharePoint Online public website will be visible to everyone on your custom domain.
Step 3: Rename your public website to use your custom domain
Set up your domain name for your SharePoint Online public website’s URL by following these steps.
- Step through the Add a domain wizard again, but this time, add a subdomain to Office 365, like www.fourthcoffee.com. (In this example, fourthcoffee.com is the root domain.)
Tip Using www with your root domain is most common, but you can use any subdomain for your website address. For example, use a subdomain with the format label.contoso.com, where contoso.com is the custom domain name you added earlier. Replace label with the value that completes the website address for the site that you want to host on SharePoint Online.
- At the step in the wizard where you’re prompted to choose the domain purpose, select only SharePoint Online.
- On the last page of the wizard, click SharePoint Online Administration Center.
- On the SharePoint Online Administration Center page, select the check box next to your public website and, on the ribbon, click Website Domains.
- In the Rename your website dialog box, in the New URL drop-down list, select the domain name you just added; for example, www.fourthcoffee.com.
- Click OK.
- On the ribbon, click DNS Information.
- In the DNS Information dialog box, write down or copy the target address. You’ll use this information to create a DNS record that points people to your website on Office 365.
Step 4: Create a DNS record to point the subdomain to your public website
Create the record by following these steps.
- At your DNS hosting provider’s website, sign in to your account.
- Create a CNAME record by using the values in the following table.
In the table:
- subdomain is the subdomain that you added, like www.fourthcoffee.com.
- name.sharepoint.com is the target address you just copied or wrote down in step 8 above

After you create the CNAME record and it updates through the DNS system, traffic for your website (for example, http://www.fourthcoffee.com) will be directed to your SharePoint Online public website.
Note Typically it takes about 15 minutes for your changes to take effect. But it can take up to 72 hours for the record that you created to update through the DNS system.
Other things to consider
The steps above help make sure users can see your website when they type, for example, www.contoso.com. If you also want them to see your site when they type just the root domain, contoso.com, contact your DNS hosting provider and ask if they have a URL redirection service to direct traffic from contoso.com to www.contoso.com. Most providers offer URL redirection, and you can check their documentation to learn how to set it up.
