Windows RT devices, such as Surface RT, come with Office Home and Student 2013, which you can use with Office 365. Office Home and Student 2013 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Since you can only install apps from the Windows Store on your Windows RT device, you cannot install the version of Office that comes with Office 365. You can, however, still get to your email, access team sites, and work on documents by using the Office 365 portal. You can also use the Windows RT apps for email, contacts, your calendar, and messaging.
What do you want to do?
Sign in to the Office 365 portal
From your browser, go to the Office 365 portal, and then sign in by using your Office 365 user ID and password.
Access your email, calendar, and contacts
You can begin using email, calendar, and contacts right away with Outlook Web App, or you can set up your Windows RT apps to work with Office 365.
Use Outlook Web App
After you’ve signed in to the Office 365 portal, use Outlook Web App to access your email, calendar, and contacts. Click Outlook, Calendar, or People at the top of the page. For information about how to use Outlook Web App in Office 365, see Start using Outlook Web App for email and calendars.
Use the Mail, People, Calendar, and Messaging apps
You can also set up the Mail, People, Calendar, and Messaging apps in Windows RT to work with Office 365. Sign in with your email address and password and Windows RT will save your account information to use with the apps.
Note Before setting up these apps on your Windows RT device, contact your Office 365 admin to make sure you’re allowed to do this.
- On Start, tap or click Mail.
- Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.
If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Settings.
- Tap or click Accounts.
- Tap or click Add an account, select Outlook for the type of account you want to add, and then follow the instructions.
Work on documents in your SharePoint sites and SkyDrive Pro
From the Office 365 portal, you can access your organization’s SharePoint sites and SkyDrive Pro by clicking SkyDrive or Sites at the top of the page. If you need to work on a document, you can use the Office Web Apps to edit and save your documents in your browser.
After you Sign in to the latest version of Office by using your Office 365 user ID, your SharePoint sites and SkyDrive Pro folders are automatically added to Places in each app. You can then save and open files directly from each desktop app.
Note Some Office desktop applications aren’t available for Windows RT, including Outlook, Visio, Access, Publisher, and Project.

Join Lync Online meetings
In Windows RT, you can join online meetings by using the Lync Windows Store app. It’s a new Lync app that’s designed specifically for the Windows 8 operating system and Window RT. You can download this app from the Windows Store or from the Software page in the Office 365 portal. (Click Settings > Office 365 Settings > Software > Office.) For more information, see What is Lync Windows Store app?
You can also join a meeting by using Lync Web App, a web-based version of the app that runs in your browser. For more information about how to use Lync Web App, see Join a meeting from Lync Web App.
