Service limitations when your hosting provider does not support SRV, CNAME, TXT, or redirection

Important    This article only applies to you if you manage your own DNS records. If you are using Office 365 Small Business and have changed your name servers to point to Office 365, you can use any DNS hosting provider.

If you manage your own DNS records and your DNS hosting provider does not support all the DNS records that Office 365 needs, some Office 365 features won’t work. We recommend that you transfer your domain to a provider that supports all required DNS records.

To see what won’t work if a specific record type isn’t supported at your provider, click the link for the record type:

Providers that support all required DNS records

You can transfer your domain from your current registrar to one of these providers.

Limitations if SRV records are not supported

If SRV records are not supported, the following Office 365 features are not available.

  • Lync IM and presence integration with Outlook Web App
  • External communication (federation) with Lync users in other organizations.
  • Public Internet Connectivity (PIC) with Skype users signed in with a Microsoft account (formerly known as a Windows Live ID).

For more information about Lync Online requirements, see Set up your network for Lync Online.

Limitations if multiple CNAME records are not supported

Several domain hosting providers, including 1&1 Internet, only support one CNAME record. If your domain is hosted at a provider that doesn’t support multiple CNAME records, you have to choose between the following features:

  • Mail desktop clients and mobile clients can use Autodiscover to automatically find the Exchange Online service so that users can sign-in without having to enter a server name
  • Lync desktop clients can use Autodiscover to automatically find the Lync Online service so that users can sign-in without having to enter a server name
  • Lync mobile clients can use Autodiscover to automatically find the Lync Online service so that users can sign-in without having to enter a server name

For more information about Lync Online requirements, see Set up your network for Lync Online.

Limitations if SPF/TXT records are not supported

If SPF/TXT records are not supported, other people may be able to use your domain to send spam or other malicious email. SPF records work by identifying the servers that are authorized to send email from your domain.
