Create DNS records at Go Daddy for Office 365

If Go Daddy is your DNS hosting provider, Office 365 can set up your domain for you automatically in the domains wizard. Or, you can follow these steps to set up the DNS records yourself:

If you’ve closed Office 365, start by gathering the information you need to create Office 365 DNS records.

 Note    Typically it takes about 15 minutes for DNS changes to take effect. However, it can take up to 72 hours for a changed record to propagate through the DNS system. If you’re having trouble adding DNS records, see Troubleshoot issues after changing your domain name or updating DNS records.

Find your DNS records at Go Daddy

Use the steps in the following table to get to the right spot in the Go Daddy website to edit your DNS records.

Sign in to your account at Go Daddy

  1. In your browser, go to http://www.godaddy.com.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click Sign In.
  1. In the Username box, type your user name.
  2. In the Password box, type your password.
  3. Click Log In.

Go to the page that has the DNS records for your domain.

  1. On the Products tab, at the end of the DOMAINS row, click Launch. The Domains page opens.
  1. On the Domains page, click the name of the domain that you’re changing.

The Domain Details page opens.

  1. On the Domain Details page, click the DNS Zone File tab.
  1. In the Zone File section, click Edit.

The Zone File Editor page opens in a new page in your browser.

Add records to configure your domain for Exchange Online

To add the three records at Go Daddy that are required for email, use the steps in the following table.

Task What you’ll see

Add a mail exchanger record (MX record).

  1. On the Go Daddy website, open the Zone File Editor page.

To find the Zone File Editor, see Find your DNS records at GoDaddy.com.

  1. On the Zone File Editor page, in the MX (Mail Exchanger) section, click Quick Add.
  1. Copy the values from the MX row in the Exchange Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
  • Priority: use 0. For more information about priority, see What is MX priority?
  • Host: use the Host name value.
  • Points To: use the Points to address value.
  • TTL: leave this set to 1 hour.

Remove any obsolete MX records.

If you have an obsolete MX record for this domain that routes email to another location:

  1. Select the row for the obsolete record.
  2. Click the red X to delete the record.

Add a CNAME record.

  1. On the Zone File Editor page, in the CNAME (Alias) section, click Quick Add.
  • Copy the values from the CNAME row in the Exchange Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
    • Host: use the Host name value.
    • Points to: use the Points to address value.
    • TTL

Add a TXT record.

  1. On the Zone File Editor page, in the TXT (Text) section, click Quick Add.
  1. Copy the values from the TXT row in the Exchange Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
  • Host
  • TXT Value
  • TTL: leave this set to 1 hour.

Save your changes.

  1. At the top of the Zone File Editor page, click Save Zone File.
  2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

Add records to configure your domain for Lync Online

To add the four records at Go Daddy that are required for Lync Online, use the steps in the following table.

Add the first CNAME record for Lync Online.

  1. On the Go Daddy website, open the Zone File Editor page.

To find the Zone File Editor page, see Find your DNS records at GoDaddy.com.

  1. In the CNAME (Alias) section, click Quick Add.
  • Copy the values from the first CNAME row in the Lync Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
  • Host: use the Host name value.
  • Points to: use the Points to address value.
  • TTL: use the TTL value.

Add the second CNAME record for Lync Online.

  1. In the CNAME (Alias) section, click Quick Add.
  • Copy the values from the second CNAME row in the Lync Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
    • Host: use the Host name value.
    • Points to: use the Points to address value.
    • TTL : use the TTL value.

Add the first SRV record.

  1. In the SRV (Service) section, click Quick Add.
  • Copy the values from the first SRV row in the Lync Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
    • Service
    • Protocol
    • Name
    • Priority
    • Weight
    • Port
    • Target
    • TTL

Add the second SRV record.

  1. In the SRV (Service) section, click Quick Add.
  • Copy the values from the second SRV row in the Lync Online section of the Office 365 Add DNS records page into the empty record:
    • Service
    • Protocol
    • Name
    • Priority
    • Weight
    • Port
    • Target
    • TTL

Save your changes.

  1. At the top of the Zone File Editor page, click Save Zone File.
  2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

Add records to configure your public website on SharePoint Online (if needed)

 Important    If you host your public website on Office 365, before making it available from your custom domain name, make sure you have finished creating your SharePoint Online public website and are ready to make it available to the public.

When you’re ready to create the CNAME record, use the following steps to add the record at Go Daddy.

  • Host: use the name of your custom domain; for example, www.contoso.com.
  • Points to: use the target address value from the DNS Information page.
  • TTL: use the TTL value.

Save your changes.

  1. At the top of the Zone File Editor, click Save Zone File.
  2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

When you’re ready to create the CNAME record, use the steps in the following table.

  1. On the Go Daddy website, open the Zone File Editor page.

  1. In the CNAME (Alias) section, click Quick Add.
  2. Add the required information in the empty record:
  • Host: use the name of your custom domain; for example, www.contoso.com.
  • Points to: use name.sharepoint.com.
    Name is the name of your custom domain, for example contoso.sharepoint.com.
  • TTL: use the TTL value.

Save your changes.

  1. At the top of the Zone File Editor, click Save Zone File.
  2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

Set up redirection so that people can get to your public website if they don’t type www

If you want people to be able to get to your public website without including www in the address, you can use the steps in the following table to set up redirection  at Go Daddy. This maps the naked domain name, for example http://fourthcoffee.com, to the full domain name, for example http://www.fourthcoffee.com. Task What you’ll see

Select the domain.

  1. On the Go Daddy website, open the Domain page for the domain.

To find the Domain page, see Find your DNS records at GoDaddy.com.

  1. Select the check box next to your domain.

Set up redirection.

  1. In the row above the domain list, click Forward, and then select Forwarding Domains.
  2. In the Forwarding and Masking dialog box, in the http:// text box, type or paste your fully qualified URL; for example http://www.fourthcoffee.com.
  3. Click OK.
  4. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK. Changes will take at least one hour to take effect.

Add an additional record that is required for Office 365

To add the additional CNAME record at Go Daddy that is required for Office 365, use the steps in the following table. Learn why this record is needed.

  2. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

Add a record at Go Daddy to verify that you own the domain, if you haven’t already

Before you add the DNS records to set up your Office 365 services, Office 365 has to confirm that you own the domain you’re adding. To add a record at Go Daddy to verify your domain, use the steps in the following table.

 Note    This record is used only to verify that you own your domain; it doesn’t affect anything else.

Task What you’ll see

Gather information from Office 365.

  1. If you’re not signed in to Office 365, sign in to Office 365. In the header, go to Admin > Office 365, and then click Domains.
  1. If you haven’t yet added a domain, on the Domains page, click Add a domain, and follow the steps in the wizard. For more information about adding a domain, see Add your domain to Office 365.
  1. If you’ve already added a domain, on the Domains page, in the Status column for the domain that you are verifying, click Setup in progress.
  2. On the Add a domain to Office 365 page, in the See instructions for performing this step with drop-down list, select GoDaddy.
  3. From the table, copy or write down the Destination or Points to Address information. You’ll need it for the next step.

Add a TXT record.

  1. On the Go Daddy website, open the Zone File Editor page.

To find the Zone File Editor page, see Find your DNS records at GoDaddy.com.

  1. On the Zone File Editor page, click Add Record. The Add DNS Record dialog box appears.
  2. Click the down arrow for the Record type: box, and then select TXT (Text).
  1. In the empty row, enter the following:
  • Host: type or paste @
  • TXT Value: use the Destination or Points to Address value.
  • TTL: use the TTL value.
  1. Click OK.

Save your changes.

  1. To save your new TXT record, click Save Zone File, a black button in the upper-right of the Zone File Editor page.
  2. Click OK.

You’ll see the Zone File Saved dialog box, which means you’ve created the TXT record.

Verify your domain in Office 365.

  1. Wait at least 15 minutes for the changes to take effect across the Internet.
  • If you’re not yet signed in to Office 365, sign in to Office 365, and in the header, go to Admin > Office 365, and then click Domains.
  1. In the Domains list, in the Status column for the domain you are verifying, click Click to verify domain.
  2. On the Confirm that you own your_domain page, click done, verify now, and in the confirmation dialog box, click Finish.
