Change your password

When you first sign in to Office 365, use the temporary password given to you, and then create a new password to use for sign-in from then on. You can also change your password at any time after you have signed in.

  1. Go to Settings Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud > Office 365 settings > Password.
  2. Type your old password, and then type a new password and confirm it.
  3. Click Save.

Some users can’t change their password in Office 365 because their organization creates and maintains their accounts. If you don’t see a link to change your password on the Password page, you can’t change your password in Office 365. Your organization might have sent you instructions to help you change your password. Follow those instructions to change your password, or ask your admin for help.

For more information, see Change the password for your organizational account.

Note    When you change your password in Office 365, be sure to update the password on your phone and desktop email program to match the new password for your account.

Office 365 admins: Things you should know about resetting your password

If you are an admin for your organization, you can reset a user's password for users who forgot their passwords.

If you are the only Office 365 admin in your organization, you can reset your own password if you have previously provided an alternate email address and a mobile phone number that can receive a text message.

Note    You need a mobile phone that can receive text messages for password reset only if one or both of the following applies to you:

  • Your organization has a custom domain that you’ve set up to use with Office 365.
  • Your Office 365 account is synchronized through directory synchronization.

For information about resetting your own password, see Reset passwords for admins. For information about how to set up your administrator account with an alternate email address and mobile phone number, see:

Password policy

When you create a new password, use the following guidelines.

  • Use 8 to 16 characters.
  • Create a strong password that can’t be easily guessed or cracked. Office 365 passwords require at least 3 of the following:
  • Lowercase letters
  • Uppercase letters
  • Numbers (0-9)
  • Symbols, including: ! @ # $ % ^ & * - _ + = [ ] { } | \ : ‘ , . ? / ` ~ “ < > ( ) ;

If you forget your password, request a password reset from an Office 365 admin. Your admin can provide you with a new temporary password to use the next time you sign in.
