If your organization has signed up with an Office 365 plan that includes a subscription to Office 365 ProPlus and SharePoint Online, Office on Demand is turned on and available for use, by default. Office on Demand applications are full Office 2013 desktop applications that are streamed to computers—only for the time that they’re being used.
All SharePoint Online users can access Office on Demand applications using the Use Office on Demand link in their SkyDrive Pro Quick Launch menu. If you’d like this link removed from the SkyDrive Pro Quick Launch menu, select the Disable Office on Demand setting in the SharePoint admin center.
Important Disabling the Use Office on Demand link in SkyDrive Pro does not disable Office on Demand applications. Users signed up with an Office 365 ProPlus subscription can still open Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in SharePoint Online document libraries with Office on Demand. But if the link in SkyDrive Pro is disabled, users can’t create or open other file types with Office on Demand, such as OneNote or Access.
To disable the Use Office on Demand link in SkyDrive Pro:
- Sign in to the Office 365 Admin Center (http://portal.microsoftonline.com).
- Choose Admin > SharePoint. You’re now in the SharePoint admin center.
- Choose settings.
- On the settings page, in the Office on Demand section, choose Disable Office on Demand.
Tip If the Use Office on Demand link still appears in SkyDrive Pro for some people, ask them to refresh their browser page.
Why hide the link?
A Use Office on Demand link appears in the SkyDrive Pro Quick Launch menu for all SharePoint Online users, even if your organization doesn’t have a subscription to Office 365 ProPlus. You might choose to disable the link in SkyDrive Pro to avoid users asking you for a subscription.
Or you might want to disable the Use Office on Demand link until you’ve deployed Microsoft Office 2013 to computers in your organization and trained users on the new user interface (UI).
Tip Office on Demand is an excellent way to train users on the new Office 2013 user interface and features without requiring a broad software distribution deployment.
What is Office on Demand?
Office on Demand applications are launched from your Internet browser and are streamed to your local PC in seconds. Office on Demand applications require Windows 7 or Windows 8 and can be used without administrator rights. Office on Demand gives you the same rich-editing functionality of Office 2013 applications—on PCs that don’t have Office installed on them!
Office on Demand saves files to managed SkyDrive Pro or SharePoint Online document libraries, by default, to avoid leaving data on the local PC. After you close Office on Demand applications they will be removed from the PC
In SharePoint Online, you can launch Office on Demand applications from your SkyDrive Pro document library. By clicking a document in the SkyDrive Pro library, you will first launch the Office Web Apps version of the file. In many cases, the Office Web Apps version will provide sufficient functionality for both viewing and editing the file. For richer editing features not available in the Office Web App, you can choose to edit the file in Office on Demand or use a pre-existing version of Office installed on your computer.
Tip To access SkyDrive Pro, click SkyDrive in the header at the top of any SharePoint site.
When you first launch Office on Demand, a browser add-in is required:
- For Internet Explorer, it’s an ActiveX control
- For Firefox, it’s a FireFox Add-On (.xpi).
- For Chrome, it’s an “Extension”.
Note The Office on Demand browser add-in does not require local administrative rights to install, so you can launch Office on Demand on any computer with an Internet connection.
After the add-in is installed, you can launch Office on Demand.
For organizations that want to use this approach for delivering Office to shared computers or other desktop service architectures, you can preinstall the browser add-in on targeted computers.

Important Lync 2013 and Outlook 2013 are not available as Office on Demand applications.
