Move a field or group

If users have already filled out forms based on your form template (form template: In InfoPath, a file or set of files that defines the data structure, appearance, and behavior of a form.), moving a field or group can cause data loss in those forms.

  1. In design mode, if the Data Source task pane is not visible, click Data Source on the View menu.
  2. If your form uses more than one data source, click Main in the Data source list. You cannot move fields or groups in a secondary data source.
  3. In the Data Source task pane, right-click the field or group you want to move, and then do one of the following:

ShowRearrange the order of the field or group within its group

    • On the shortcut menu, click Move Up or Move Down.

ShowMove the field or group to a new field or group

    • On the shortcut menu, click Move.
    • In the Move Field or Group dialog box, select a new location for the field or group.

Notes

  • If your form template is based on a sample form, pre-existing XML Schema, database, or Web service, you can move only the fields and groups that you have added to the data source.
  • The information in this topic may not apply if you are working with a form designed using Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 without the service pack installed.
