Insert a section

You can use a section to organize controls on your form for your users. A section contains other controls and is bound to a group (group: An element in the data source that can contain fields and other groups. Controls that contain other controls, such as repeating tables and sections, are bound to groups.).

When you insert a section onto your form, you are essentially inserting an empty container. For the section control to be useful, you must insert other controls inside it.

ShowInsert a section (automatically create the data source)

When you insert a section onto your form, you can have Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003 automatically generate the data source (data source: The collection of fields and groups that define and store the data for an InfoPath form. Controls in the form are bound to the fields and groups in the data source.). If you do this, InfoPath creates a group that is bound (bind: To connect a control to a field or group in the data source so that data entered into the control is saved. When a control is unbound, it is not connected to a field or group, and so data entered into the control will not be saved.) to the section.

  1. In design mode, place the insertion point where you want to insert the section.
  2. If the Controls task pane is not visible, click More Controls on the Insert menu.
  3. In the Controls task pane, select the Automatically create data source check box.
  4. Under Insert controls, click Section.
  5. To add controls to the section, drag the control that you want from the Controls task pane into the section.

Note   You should not move an existing control into the section, because the control's field will not be part of the section's group.

  1. To test the section, click Preview Form on the Standard toolbar.

ShowInsert a section (bind to an existing group)

  1. In design mode, place the insertion point where you want to insert the section.
  2. If the Data Source task pane is not visible, click Data Source on the View menu.
  3. In the Data Source task pane, right-click the group that you want to bind the section to, and then do one of the following:
    • To insert a section that contains controls, click Section with Controls on the shortcut menu, if it is available. The controls will be bound to the fields in the section's group.
    • To insert a section that does not contain controls, click Section on the shortcut menu.

Note   If you do not see Section on the shortcut menu, make sure that the group does not repeat.

  1. To test the section, click Preview Form on the Standard toolbar.

ShowTip

You can also insert a section that is bound to an existing group by using the Controls task pane, as long as the Automatically create data source check box is cleared.
