Set up Office for iPad with Office 365 for business

Office for iPad includes, Word for iPad, Excel for iPad, and PowerPoint for iPad. The apps are available to download for free and with a valid Office 365 subscription, you will be able to create and edit documents on your iPad.  

Office 365 business plans that allow editing in Office for iPad

Office 365 has many subscription plans to fit your business needs and only some plans support editing in Office for iPad. They include:

  • Office 365 Small Business Premium
  • Office 365 Midsize Business
  • Office 365 Enterprise E3 and E4

Here are other Office 365 plans that support editing in Office for iPad: * Office 365 Government E3 and E4

  • Office 365 for Government G3 and G4
  • Office 365 Education A3 and A4
  • Office 365 ProPlus

If your Office 365 plan includes a license that supports editing in Office for iPad, check that the license to install the latest version of Office is assigned to your account.

Verify your Office 365 plan

If you don’t know what Office 365 plan you have, then here’s how you can find out:

  1. Sign in to Office 365 with your organization ID. Go to Settings Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud > Office 365 settings.
  2. To verify if you have a valid Office 365 plan, on the right pane, under Assigned licenses, look for The latest desktop version of Office.

If you’re an administrator, here’s how you can find out the subscription information:

  1. Sign in to the Office 365 portal as an admin user.
  2. In the Office 365 admin center, locate Users and Groups.
  3. Click the user who has an issue activating Office 365 ProPlus or Office 365 Small Business Premium.
  4. Depending on the subscription, make sure that either Office 365 ProPlus or Office 365 Small Business Premium is listed and selected.

Install Office for iPad apps

To install Office for iPad apps, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, you need an iPad running iOS 7 or later.

There are two options to install Office for iPad apps:

  • On the Get started with Office 365 page, click the links to go to the online Apple Store for downloading the apps to the iPads.

Here’s how to get to the Get started with Office 365 page:

Sign in to Office 365 with your organization ID. Go to Settings Settings: update your profile, install software and connect it to the cloud >Office 365 settings > Get started > Phone & tablet, and choose iPad from the Choose your phone or tablet list.

Office 365 Portal

  • Admins can also add an external link to the software installation package on the company portal by using the Windows Intune Software Publisher. This link lets users download the app directly from an online store, or run the app as a Web app from a website. The app is not hosted by Windows Intune. Work with files on OneDrive for Business and Office 365 SharePoint

To work with files on OneDrive for Business or Office 365 SharePoint, sign in to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for iPad with your organization ID. Your OneDrive for Business account will automatically show in the list of services.

If you’ve already signed in with a personal Microsoft account and would like to work on files located in OneDrive for Business or Office 365 SharePoint site, just add these as cloud services.

To add, tap Open > Add a Place. Tap OneDrive for Business and sign in with your organization ID.

Removing a Microsoft account or Office 365 account from the iPad

To remove Microsoft account information from the device:

  1. Go to iPad Settings.
  2. In the Settings, tap to select one of your Office for iPad apps like, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  3. Under RESET, tap Reset <app name>.
  4. Slide to enable Delete Login Credentials.
  5. Close the app. To close, on your iPad, press the Home button twice, swipe to find your app, and swipe the preview screen up to close it.

The next time you launch the app, all your login credentials will be deleted.

Best practices to address sign in and activation issues

If you see any of the following errors when signing into your account, then see the best practices section for things you can do to troubleshoot:

  • There is a problem with your account. Please try again later.
  • We are unable to connect right now. Please check your network and try again.
  • You need to do something extra before we can sign you in.
  • The User ID or password is incorrect. Please try again.
  • This Apple ID doesn’t have a paid Office 365 subscription.
  • This account doesn’t have a paid Office 365 subscription.
  • Your account is in a bad state.

Here are some of the best practices users can follow to address some of these sign in issues:

  • Use your organization ID or your Microsoft account associated with an Office 365 Home and Business plan when signing to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for iPad.
  • Verify that you are signing in with a valid Office 365 account. To verify, sign in to your Office 365 portal with the same user name and password.
  • If you are an admin, verify if you have an Office 365 ProPlus license.
  • If you see the errors: No subscription found or This Apple ID doesn’t have a paid Office 365 subscription, try resetting the apps. To reset, delete your account credentials from your iPad and then sign in again.
