Change the size, shape, or location of a toolbar

Microsoft Office toolbars are designed to be both conveniently located and out of the way, but you may prefer to move the toolbars to a location that suits you better. You can move a toolbar to different parts of the screen, and you can also resize a docked toolbar and reshape a floating toolbar.

What do you want to do?

Move a toolbar

You can move a toolbar to a location where you consider it both convenient and out of the way. A toolbar can be docked to the top, bottom, or side of the screen, or it can float.

  • To move a docked toolbar, drag the move handle Button image  to a new location. If you move the toolbar to the top, bottom, or side of the screen, it will dock automatically. If you move the toolbar away from the sides of the screen, it will float.

  • To move a floating toolbar, drag the toolbar by its title bar to the new location.

Resize a docked toolbar

When two or more toolbars are docked together on the same row, they may overlap. You can make one toolbar smaller to see more of the commands on the other toolbar.

  • To resize a docked toolbar that is on the same row with another toolbar, drag the move handle Button image
    .Button image
  •  Note   You cannot resize a docked toolbar that is on a row by itself.

Reshape a floating toolbar

You can change the shape of a floating toolbar (or menu bar). The same buttons or menus remain on the toolbar when you change its shape.

  1. To reshape a floating toolbar, point to any edge of the toolbar.
  2. When the pointer changes to a Horizontal double-headed arrow  or a Vertical double-headed arrow , drag the edge of the toolbar to reshape it.
