Note If your text exceeds the size of the placeholder, Microsoft PowerPoint reduces the font size and line spacing incrementally as you type, to make the text fit.
Add text to an AutoShape
- To add text that becomes part of the shape and moves when you move the shape, select the AutoShape (AutoShapes: A group of ready-made shapes that includes basic shapes, such as rectangles and circles, plus a variety of lines and connectors, block arrows, flowchart symbols, stars and banners, and callouts.) and start typing.
- To add text that is independent of the shape and does not move when you move the shape, add a text box (text box: A movable, resizable container for text or graphics. Use text boxes to position several blocks of text on a page or to give text a different orientation from other text in the document.).
- On the Drawing
toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.), click Text Box
.
- Do one of the following:
Add text that stays on a single line
Add text that wraps

On the slide, point to where you want the text box, drag the text box to the size you want, and then type or paste your text.
Note To add text to a line, connector, or freeform (freeform: Any shape you draw by using the Curve, Freeform, and Scribble tools. Freeform shapes can include straight lines and freehand curves. They can be drawn opened or closed and can be edited.) AutoShape, you must add text using a text box.
Add text to a text box
- On the Drawing
toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.), click Text Box
.
- Do one of the following:
Add text that stays on a single line
Add text that wraps
Add WordArt
- Select the slide you want to add WordArt (WordArt: Text objects you create with ready-made effects to which you can apply additional formatting options.) to.
- On the Drawing toolbar, click Insert WordArt
.
- Click the WordArt effect you want, and then click OK.
- In the Edit WordArt Text dialog box, type the text you want.
- Do any of the following:
- To change the font type, in the Font list, select a font.
- To change the font size, in the Size list, select a size.
- To make text bold, click the Bold button.
- To make text italic, click the Italic button.
