Number the cells in a table
 
  1. Select the cells (cell: A box formed by the intersection of a row and column in a worksheet or a table, in which you enter information.) you want to number.

    To number the beginning of each row, select only the first column in the table by clicking the column's top gridline (gridlines: Thin lines that indicate the cell boundaries in a table. Gridlines do not print when you print a document.) or border.

  2. Click Numbering Button image on the Formatting toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.).
