- On the View menu, click Outline.
- If the subdocuments are collapsed, click Expand Subdocuments
on the Outlining
toolbar (toolbar: A bar with buttons and options that you use to carry out commands. To display a toolbar, click Customize on the Tools menu, and then click the Toolbars tab.).
- If a subdocument is locked (a lock icon appears below the subdocument icon
), unlock the subdocument.
How?
- Click anywhere in the subdocument you want to unlock.
- On the Outlining toolbar, click Lock Document
.

Double-click the subdocument icon
of the subdocument you want to open.

To close the subdocument and return to the master document (master document: A "container" for a set of separate files (or subdocuments). You can use a master document to set up and manage a multipart document, such as a book with several chapters.), click Close on the File menu.
Note If you share the master document with a workgroup, collapse the subdocuments before you close the master document so that others can gain access to them.
